Alex Toll leads the way home at marathon

THE London Marathon dominated the focus of club runners with many of them taking part in the iconic event.

Barrow Runners had 18 athletes complete the race led home by Alex Toll in 2.49.18, and his fifth consecutiv­e year under 2:50;00. Just seconds behind was Ian Cox in 2.49.51, while Chris Neil ran an excellentl­y paced race, finishing in 2.55.06 securing himself a PB and first ‘sub-3’.

Barrow’s first lady home was Emma Brown in her first race for the club. Emma, originally from Barrow, now lives in Australia and joined Barrow Runners last year as she needed a UK club to enter in the Championsh­ip start. She finished in an impressive 2.55.06. Vicky Elston was the next female home in another PB of 3.28, closely followed by Helen James in 3.30.52.

Poplar Running Club also had a number of runners taking part in the London Marsthon, led home by ladies captain Nicola Holmes in a time of 3:06:20. Other finishers were: Philip Elliott 3:14:57, Rebecca Holmes 3:32:28, Marie Reynolds 3:34:27, Anna Harding 3:35:58, Kirsty Dale 3:40:23, Martin Duggan 4:43:16, Kelly Clark 6:22:56, Dawn Tobin 7:12:57. Elsewhere two members took part in the Blackpool Marathon, Joanne Royston recording a time of 3:54:32 and David Pitchford 4:19:54.

Shepshed Running Club had three runners at the London Marathon. First home was Ian Benskin in, 2:59:50, followed by Jerry Cook 3:19:09 and making his London debut Dave Hattersley in 4:31:44.
