Birstall Stamford denied in JD Thomas league cup final

THE J.D. Thomas league cup final proved to be an outstandin­g game between two quality sides in Birstall Stamford and Froleswort­h United. The first half was pretty evenly fought with both sides having their share of the ball, but goals on 11 and 26 minutes from Birstall’s Ethan Bibby saw them go in 2-0 up at half time.

Froleswort­h attacked in the second half and were rewarded with a penalty when Cameron Weston was upended in the box. The penalty was duly despatched by Sam Young. Then on 63 minutes Sam Young got Froleswort­h back on level terms to set up a great finish.

With everyone predicting extra time, Froleswort­h’s Cameron Weston slamed the ball home in the 89th minute to claim the silverware.

The Division Three honours were settled with Syston Brookside confirmed as champions with a narrow 3-2 away win at Plough Thorpe Acre. Two goals for Plough’s Tom James wasn’t enough as two for Syston’s Nick Lunn and one for Sonny Parker saw them claim top spot. Kegworth Imperial must also be happy with their season, confirming runners up spot with a 2-1 win at Ratby Sports.

Burton and White Hart shared the points at Towles Fields in a keenly fought contest that finished in a 2-2 draw.Burton opened the scoring after 30 minutes when Phil McHale broke clear of the defence and finished clinically with an angled shot from the edge of the box. However within two minutes White Hart had leveled the scores. The second half was more of the same with a few chances at both ends but defences largely in control.Burton regained the lead midway through the second half when Phil McHale scored his second from close range. White Hart continued to press for the equaliser and were rewarded 10 minutes from time with a well headed goal from a set piece.

In Division Two Long Whatton need just two points from three games to secure top spot after beating close rivals Birstall Stamford A 7-4. Two each from Luke Allard and Mathew Dadswell their main scorers. Monsell club Wasps lost their grip after dropping two points in a two all draw at Shepshed United.

In the Griffin Senior cup F.C. Poplar continue their successful season with an impressive 6-3 win over Premier side St Mathews Dynamo, whilst F.C. Loughborou­gh beat Leicester Bharat at home.
