NEW NAME FOR POLICE PRIORITIES. The Police Priorities Setting Group for the East Leake and Keyworth Areas has a new name. The group is now going under the title the South Rushcliffe Villages Community Safety Group.

Membership is not restricted to parish council members and Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators but is intended for anybody with a role in the community, such as youth leaders and event organisations.

MOON BRA WALK. An event with a difference is planned at East Leake on Saturday evening next weekend, May 13 -- a Charity Moon Bra Walk.

The Walk is in aid of two good causes, the British Heart Foundation and a fund established for former East Leake resident Sarah West and her partner and two young girls.

The fund for Sarah – who grew up in the village and attended Brookside and Harry Carlton schools and later worked for ten years as a teacher at the Lantern Lane school and whose parents still live in the village - has been labelled the ‘Making Memories Fund’.

The money raised is to be used to provide help for the family to have a dream holiday of their choice as Sarah battles through an horrific time as she fights having Metastatic Breast Cancer, which is incurable and which has spread to other parts of her body.

Jenny Mellors at Newton Fallowell Hartleys estate agents in East Leake is helping to organise the event.

RESTORATION OF FINGER POSTS. Plans are in progress by the parish council at East Leake to arrange for the refurbishment and restoration of some of the cast iron finger posts in and around the village.

To date, the finger post at the top of Woodgate/ Rempstone Road and the post at the bottom of Castle Hill/Main Street have been restored and more are to be tackled, including the one on Main Street/Station Road. The post at the T-junction of Main Street/ Gotham Road is to be cleaned. Work on a post at Stocking Lane/Gotham Road is yet to be arranged.

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK. Plans for this year’s Christian Aid Week in East Leake are well in hand. It takes place from Sunday May 14 to May 20.

With help, the committee are hoping to cover some of the village with a house-tohouse collection but they have to admit that as the village has grown so much and the collectors have become fewer they can no longer cover the whole village. They have confirmed they will be holding a street collection on the Saturdays of the 13th and 20th May to give the people who want to support this very worthwhile cause the opportunity to do so. There will also be the annual Plant, Cake and Produce Coffee Morning. This will be on Saturday 27th May 10.00 am – 12.00 noon at the Methodist Church.

If there is anyone willing to help with the collections they are invited to contact Lesley on 01509 853697.

PARISH UNHAPPY WITH BOROUGH. Members of East Leake Parish Council have suggested that Rushcliffe Borough Council is ignoring the Neighbourhood Plan Policies in the new Village Plan, especially in relation to the planning application for 28 Main Street and the policy involving Housing Mix.

The parish planning committee have suggested that monitoring should be put in place in readiness for reviewing.

It was agreed unanimously by the committee, under the chairmanship of Coun. Carys Thomas, that the council should defend Policy H3 in the Neighbourhood Plan vigorously given that the East Leake electorate had voted for the Plan itself.

Policy H3 of the Plan is headed Policy H3 – Types of Market Homes and says

Developers will provide a mixture of homes for the market that broadly reflects Rushcliffe Borough Council’s and East Leake’s most up to date assessments of housing needs derived from projection of household types as shown here:

One and two bedrooms: between 30 per cent and 40 per cent; 3 bedrooms between 40 per cent and 60 per cent; 4 bedrooms between 10 per cent and 20 per cent; 5+ bedrooms Between zero per cent and five per cent

In addition, a diverse mix of home types within each of the categories will be provided in line with projected need, to include for example: services homes for older people, bungalows, apartments, a mixture of detached, semi-detached and terraced homes of all sizes.

WALKING FOOTBALL THIS WEEKEND. This weekend sees the second of ‘ Walking Football’ event held in East Leake and which was first introduced last year, then to mark the 50th anniversary of England winning the World Cup at Wembley. It was so much enjoyed it is being repeated again on Saturday.

Memories of the excitement 50 years ago when England beat West Germany 4-2 in the World Cup Final at Wembley were re-lived in July last year with the walking match staged at the village Leisure Centre. The success of that event and the interest it created has led the organisers -- the East Leake St Mary’s Men’s Club – to bring it back on to the local events calendar.

The second game will again be at the East Leake Leisure Centre and will be taking place on Saturday from 10am – 12noon followed again, as it was last year, by a BBQ at the Rectory.

Organiser Mr Colin Knight says they are hoping to get some church teams from West Bridgford Churches -- St Giles, St Pauls and St Lukes -- to join with them in a South Notts tournament as well as at least one local school.

Mr Knight says additionally, they are holding a Football Holiday Club at Costock during the Spring Bank Holiday week in May and plan to invite children via the local schools.

MEET YOUR VILLAGE. Several hundred residents in East Leake were given the opportunity on Saturday to learn more about where they live with an extremely successful ‘Meet your Village’ event held in the village hall organised by the village Community Action Group.

The two hour long event was many times more successful than the organisers had dared to wish for and embraced most aspects of village life in the East Leake and showed what an active village it is, with so many varying interests catered for. And already many of the visitors from Saturday are asking, when is the next one.

A number of local businesses and many organisations were showcased and the event was an easy opportunity for visitors to the hall to find out what is going on in their village and what is available to them there. So many turned up it was difficult to get round the hall and everyone had to be patient to await their turn to visit the various stalls.

There was ample opportunity for visitors to look round to see where they might become part of the village by becoming a volunteer in an area of interest for themselves, as well as being able to meet new people and enjoy an informal welcome to the village, especially for those who are new residents -- and of those there are many taking into account the very many new homes that have been and are being occupied at present.

The three main churches were represented as was the parish council, with chairman Coun. Conrad Oatey and deputy clerk Sue Lewis present along with other parish councillors. The village Library and the village fire service were among the exhibitors.

Mrs Jenny de Villiers, Chair of the Community Action group, said they were astounded and thrilled at the turn out of people “Everyone seemed to be pleased with the morning and we certainly were with the numbers supporting our event.”

LIVELY AND UPLIFTING. St Mary’s parish church at East Leake is offering a special activity on Saturday afternoon this weekend which is described as Lively and uplifting worship for all.

The event will be from 2pm to 4pm in Church and will be followed by tea/ coffee and some great cakes and goodies. The invite is for those interested to go and join Cursillo people who have experienced the love and joy of God and to hear the testimony of a member of the St Mary’s congregation, and share the faith journey.

“If you like a good sing – you will love this,” promises the Priest in Charge, the Rev Tim Parker.

ASYLUM SEEKERS AND REFUGEES. Asylum Seekers and Refugees will be the subject of the talk given to East Leake Mothers’ Union members at their meeting on Monday next week, May 8 when Jane Henson will the speaker.

Jane and her husband, the Reverend John Henson, spent time working at St. George’s Cathedral in Jerusalem, so she has first-hand experience of the situation in the Middle East.

An invite is given to everyone interested to go along and listen to her talk, and to take friends who would be interested in what she has to say.

Contacts for the group are Judith James on 01509 853126 and Gill Young 01509 852536.
