Ten receive GB call-up for Budapest

-

TEN Loughborough swimmers have been named in the Great Britain team that will travel to the World Swimming Championships in Budapest this July.

Double Olympic champion Adam Peaty Jocelyn Ulyett top the billing after being automatically selected based on winning performances at the British Championships in times that exceeded the qualification standard.

Peaty stormed to both 50m and 100m breaststroke glory, whilst Ulyett won the 200m breaststroke in a stunning new British record.

Also selected are 50m and 200m butterfly British championship winner Charlotte Atkinson, Georgia Davies who won both 50m and 100m backstroke gold at the British Championships, as well as James Wilby, Luke Greenbank, Molly Renshaw, Sarah Vasey, Siobhan Marie O’Connor and Abbie Wood.

For Abbie Wood it will be the 18-yearold’s senior international debut.

When the Loughborough College Sport student won gold in the 400m individual medley at the European Games in Baku in 2015 she made history as the first ever swimmer to top the podium.

Tom Boardman, Elite Sport Tutor at Loughborough College, said: “It is fantastic to see Abbie selected for the World Championships. This is tribute to her dedication and hard work. Her performance in the pool as well as academically is consistently outstanding.

“We constantly adapt to offer Abbie the best possible support around her training and competition and not only is she is on course for the highest grade possible in her studies but she is also firmly on the path to the Tokyo Olympics.”

British Swimming Head Coach Bill Furniss said: “We’ve got all of our top swimmers there along with an exciting group of juniors that came through and showed themselves and their potential to achieve within the international arena. It’s a good balance between youth and senior, and will create a positive and productive dynamic.

“We’ve already got one eye on Tokyo and therefore we want to introduce that next generation of elite swimmers to world class arenas. They did a good job in putting themselves forward but now the work starts again as we build towards the World Championships in Budapest in July.”
