Birstall Stamford exact revenge over Frolesworth United with victory in Premier Cup
BIRSTALL Stamford won the Sunday Premier Cup with a resounding 4-1 victory over Frolesworth United on Friday evening.
The result came just five days after Stamford had squandered a two goal advantage to United in the JD Thomas League Cup Final and with such disappointment fresh in the memory it was clear from the off that Birstall were desperate to make amends.
With just six minutes on the clock the Frolesworth back line lost their shape allowing the scampering Rikki Bates to race clear and emphatically rifle home right footed.
United sought an instant response but it was Birstall who scored next to extend their lead.
Right full back Jake Simmons found space out wide before delivering towards the near post forcing United captain Mark Baker to intervene, as he inadvertently headed past Oli Faulkner at the near post, doubling Birstall’s lead.
Birstall Stamford added a third just two minutes later when Ryan Seal smartly evaded the on rushing Faulkner, before keeping his composure to slide home.
The interval allowed a shell shocked Frolesworth outfit to regroup and they emerged with more incision to their possession, but were dealt a fatal blow when Hill capped his own superb personal appearance as he both won and converted a penalty.
United netted a consolation strike as Sam Young swept home, following neat wing play from Callum Wills.
However it would prove to little to late and even the dismissal of Lewis Dodd for a second bookable offence was not to halt Birstall’s march to the Sunday Premier Cup.
Congratulations also to Long Whatton for securing the Division Two championship with a point at home against Shepshed United. The fight for second place is turning into a real bunfight, with three teams in contention. Monsell club Wasps saw a major setback in their bid for promotion after a 7-2 defeat at home to F.C. Phantom, while Birstall Stamford “A” secured a 6-1 win away to Beacon..
In the Griffin cup quarter finals, Quorn Royals were at home to Division One bottom side Hathern, who acquitted themselves perfectly. After going into the changing rooms 2-0 down at half time Hathern never gave up, but lost 4-2 courtesy of a Craig Noble hat trick. F.C. Lougborogh found it hard going at Birstall Stamford Res but benefitted from a first half own goal to put them through.
