Labour and Lib/Dems name MP candidates

-

THE East Midlands Labour Party and the Loughborough and Charnwood Liberal Democrats have announced which candidates are to stand in the General Election.

The Labour Party has declared that long standing Charnwood Borough councillor and leader of the Labour group Jewel Miah is to stand as candidate for the Loughborough constituency.

He told the Echo: “I’m a local candidate and want to make sure Loughborough people get the best deal from Government and over the last seven years I do not think they have.”

Mr Miah is also standing for re-election as the Leicestershire County councillor for Loughborough East.

The East Midlands Labour Party has also stated Sean Kelly-Walsh will stand as candidate for Charnwood, Sean Sheahan for North West Leicestershire and David Mellen for Rushcliffe.

The Liberal Democrats has announced Simon Sansome is to stand as candidate for Charnwood and David Walker for Loughborough after there was “unanimous support” at a recent meeting.

Mr Sansome, a former Charnwood Borough councillor, said: “David and I intend to show how the fairer, open and tolerant policies of the Lib Dems will produce a better country.

“We Lib Dems will either be the effective opposition to the Tories or the government of the country.”

Mr Walker, another former Charnwood Borough councillor, said: “This government is cutting and running because it thinks it can grab a larger working majority from Corbyn’s collapsing Labour party.”

The General Election is to take place on Thursday, June 8.
