GARDENING CLUB. To deadhead or not to deadhead - that is the question. Why is my plant going yellow? What’s this pretty fungus? Why is this mystery plant taking over my garden? Why does my climbing rose flower poorly?

John Schofield plans to answer all of our gardening questions at his talk for the Gardening Club on Wednesday, May 17 at 7.30pm in the Gap at the back of the Barrow upon Soar Baptist Church in Beveridge Street.

He has called his talk “We’re in the garden together” and plans to help us all with common garden problems and conundrums.

He visited the club last year with a practical talk on hanging baskets so many will remember that John eats, drinks, sleeps and lives for gardening - so his talk will be lively and informative.

John is bringing along some of his own plants for sale and this proved very popular last time as his plants were very healthy and reflect his passion. Also, for something a bit different, the club hopes to hold a plant swap. Do you really need 18 tomato plants?

This is a fantastic opportunity for you to bring along a plant from your own garden and swap it with another. It is a great way to get a different plant for absolutely nothing and chat with the person who donated it. I think this will be a different kind of evening and will be great fun.

Everybody is very welcome, guests and visitors on the night just £3.

METHODIST CHURCH CRAFT FAIR. On the 20th May, Barrow upon Soar Methodist Church will be hosting a Craft Fair.

Everything at the event has been hand created by very talented people, please put this date in your diary and come along and support them. There will be many items on sale such as that individual piece of jewellery, children’s knitted items, hand you crafted cards and glitter items for the children and much more. Come along for that extra special gift for that special friend, or even as a treat for yourself.

There will also be a plant stall for all avid gardeners, home-made cakes and preserves and refreshments will also be available. The event opens at 10am and closes at 2pm so there is plenty of time for you to browse and have a pleasant time.

BARROW UPON SOAR OPEN GARDENS. This year Barrow open gardens will take place on the weekend of Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th June 2017 from 11am to 5pm.

Discover the hidden world of gardens and growing in this much-visited open garden weekend. As we prepare for another Barrow Open Gardens (BOG) in aid of Rainbows Children’s Hospice who knows what will be in store? Will there be more builders yard planting and recycled shower cubicle greenhouses?

We can guarantee immaculate and classic village gardens, quirky havens and much loved vegetable plots. Head to any garden with the Open Garden sign to purchase your weekend ticket.

With such a wide variety on show, every garden in our village has a story to tell. Visitors old and new can be sure of a very warm welcome in Barrow-upon-Soar gardens.

For £4 you get a two day programme that acts as a Garden Passport allowing you to view gardens at any point during 11am and 5pm on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th June 2016. Accompanied under 14s are free.

To buy a programme purchase from any participating shop or open garden.

Venues for plant sales, refreshments and additional parking will be indicated on the larger, clearer map in the revamped programme alongside any other attractions.

VILLAGE HALL REPORT. Costock village hall chairman John Collins reported progress on the objectives for last year, and said the flat roof to the rear of the building had been replaced and the rear side of the sloping roof over the chair store had been refelted.

He said both the projects and seen the work all completed to a good specification and guaranteed for 20 years. The fascia boards and guttering to these areas were replaced using UPVC materials.

Extra sockets and a spur for the water boiler was installed in the kitchen. The emergency exit sign was moved to over the small hall door as the existing door is too narrow for some wheelchairs.

Extra lighting has been installed in the car park to ensure the safety of pedestrians when in this area in the dark. The bar area has been redecorated.

The chairman said one community fund raising event was held during the year, a qQuiz which again was sold out and raised £483.

Many thanks to Sue Smith who organised the event.

The Tea and Bytes afternoon continued through the year with a small break over the summer and Christmas periods. This event is held every third Tuesday of the month, to provide villagers the opportunity to meet and have a cup of tea and some cake and generally have a social afternoon. In addition anybody that is having a problem or needs advice on computers can talk to some enthusiasts.

Mr Collins thanked all who had helped to make these events so successful.

The Chairman reported that the past 12 months had been a very successful year and that the hall remained in good order.

Financially there was a surplus for the year of £793.27.

The chairman said the main objectives for the coming year would be to en sure the hall is to be maintained in good order. And to organise and oversee the replacement of the main Hall lighting with dimmable LED units.

This will provide a small saving in energy, require significantly less maintenance and provide lighting suitable for various events, particularly those that require lower levels of light.

Another project will be to organise and oversee the construction of a new sloping floor to the east exit of the main hall.

The existing slope is of a temporary construction and has a small step down. The new step will provide improved disabled egress as well as plans to install a cinema system , subject to funding, to have films shows suitable for all sections of the community.

It will also provide an opportunity to run events that include the younger generation.
