Youngsters celebrate Spanish win

-

LOUGHBOROUGH RFC’S U14 side have returned victorious from an international tournament in Spain.

The youngsters competed in the URO Rugby Alcorcon Festival near Madrid on Saturday, April 22.

In a series of challenging and often very tense encounters, they got through the early rounds, beating teams from Santander, Valencia and Majahonda.

On the other side of the draw, the host side Alcorcon, made similar progress, setting up an ideal final between the two overwhelming favourites.

The boys from Loughborough however had obviously saved their best for last and a stern talking to by the coaches Steve Cusick, Rich Booth and Ramiro Gomez Sanchez clearly did the business.

They came out fighting and with game heads on – running out convincing winners, beating Alcorcon 36–0.

More than 45 parents and children took part in the tour, sponsored by local engineering company, SSA-UK-Ltd, Switchgear Substation Alliance.

A club spokesman said as well as the rugby, the tour party saw all the cultural sites of Madrid, including the old town, Plaza Mayor, the Sofia Museum and Art Gallery and of course the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, home of Real Madrid.

“All of the players enjoyed a fantastic time and will always remember the experience of winning their first international trophy, with hopefully many more to come.”
