Students perform for a worthy cause
GIGS with a twist - Loughborough students organised two music events in a bid to raise funds for charities that mean a lot to people they know.
The Colours of Youth and The Swingin Moon were the themes of the gigs organised by 18-year-old Lydia Mason and 19-yearold Charlotte Denston.
Lydia, of Barrowupon-Soar, took control of The Colours of Youth event, which took place at Loughborough College - where she studies.
The evening saw student bands take to the stage with the line up including Equinoxx, Skribbles MC and The Spriggs and Scribble Victory.
The musicians performed to a packed theatre and raised nearly £120 for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Lydia, who sings lead vocals for Equinoxx, said: “We wanted to present a really uplifting set that cap- tured what’s important to young people today.
“I had been involved in a gig for the Teenage Cancer Trust to support the charity after a friend lost her sister to cancer and the bands involved decided to focus our fund-raising efforts on the charity for the Loughborough College gig.”
Charlotte, who studies music at Loughborough College, raised more than £190 at the college during The Swingin Moon event.
She said: “We picked acts not just to appear in the main line up, but also to play ahead of it to really create that feeling.
“There was a saxophonist in the Box Office area, a violinist, piano player and singer as people entered the theatre and for the gig itself a trumpeter alongside bands like 50 Shades of Funk, which I am part of.
“There was a good crowd and a fantastic atmosphere. At the end we even had an encore featuring past students and our tutor Simon Clarke.”
Charlotte added: “The Pancreatitis Support Network is a charity personal to one of the musicians and so we decided we would donate proceeds from the ticket sales and collect on the night for them.”
