SILEBY METHODIST

CHURCH. Sunday, May 21, saw Rev John bring the Word of God to the 10.45am service.

He spoke about Christian Aid week and gave examples from the Bible where folk had gone beyond the call of duty to do the right thing for their fellow humans. Margaret played the piano for this Communion Service – thank you both.

Monday, 22nd, saw the Ladies Circle and friends meet to hold a small party to celebrate Enid’s significant birthday – many happy returns dear.

Wednesday, 24th, had Rev Andrew Lomax, along with a member of the congregation, visit Highbury Nursing Home in the morning for a short service. He spoke about the ten lepers cured by Jesus and how only one returned to thank him. We should never forget how good God is to us and give him thanks and praise.

Thursday and Saturday, 25/27th, had Cafe@Chapel open from 9.30am -11.30am. Many thanks to all our friends who support these two efforts.

Please note that on Saturday, 3rd June, there will be no coffee morning.

Saturday, 10th June will be special! We are hosting a Craft Fair and it will be wonderful. There will be ten tables with crafts of many varieties so if you want a really special and different gift, do come along, browse and buy! We will be open from 10am until 2pm and refreshments will be served during this time as well. There will be a homemade cake stall and raffle as well so do please support this event.

Sunday, 28th May had Margaret Williams visiting Sileby for the 10.45am service.

As it was Ascension Day last Thursday she spoke about the impact this event had on Jesus’ disciples. As we had no pianist we improvised by reciting some of the songs and singing unaccompanied others. It made for a different service – thank you Margaret.

Next week Rev Andrew Lomax is bringing along his guitar so we will have music for our service at 10.45am.

HIGHGATE MEDICAL CENTRE PPG. Highgate Medical Centre PPG will be holding a Coffee Morning on Saturday 10th June 10am - 12noon. The theme will be “Getting Sileby Healthier” and there will be a variety of stalls and information from Diet to Joining a Group for Fun.

Everyone is invited and we look forward to seeing you.

CHRISTIAN AID COFFEE MORNING A big thank you to everyone who helped Normanton’s Christian Aid coffee morning raise £524 for this worldwide charity.

This compares very well with the £382 that we raised last year.

This year, the weather was really kind to us, and more people than usual turned up, compared to last year. We are delighted with the amount that we have been able to donate to Christian Aid!

So many thanks to those who came along, and all those who donated cakes, plants, books and raffle prizes, not to mention the jewellery stall and the quiz.

Thanks also to those who “manned” the stalls and served up the coffees and teas.

Bunny

CPR TRAINING. Plans are still proposed for another session of CPR training in Bunny.

The Parish Council would make the arrangements for a session of training led by the Community Heart Beat Trust.

The Council would hope that those who are already trained would assist by putting themselves forward as volunteers to help any residents who needed CPR in an emergency.

Coun. Mrs Chris Brown says they like to encourage a spread of residents from different areas of the village – Victoria and Albert Roads, Moor Lane and Main Streets, Gotham Lane and ‘garden city’, the Barns and Loughborough Road – to attend and would welcome a representative from each of the groups who use the village hall wo might like to take part in the training.

Community Heart Beat charge £150 for the training and while the Parish Council can meet such expense, contributions towards the cost would be gratefully accepted.

If anyone is interested in being trained and then offering their expertise as a volunteer to be called upon if needed, please contact parish councillors Chris Brown on 0115 921179) or Penny Wakefield on 0753 1903490).

The Parish Council would decide whether to go ahead with the training depending on the response.

Woodhouse Eaves

GARDENS OPEN FOR 28TH YEAR. Twenty gardens will be on show at this year’s Woodhouse Eaves open gardens.

The event, in its 28th year, will also see the village windmill, a collection of scooters and an ‘enchanted wood’ open to the public over the weekend of 3rd and 4th June.

The reconstructed windmill (the original structure burned down in 1945) offers fantastic views of Charnwood Forest from its high point in the village.

Also on hand this year will be a Master Composter, offering tips and demos on how to turn food and garden waste into fuel for your flowers.

The open gardens event raises money for the upkeep of St Paul’s Church in the village. The church is open over the weekend for visitors to view its stained glass and Victorian tiles. It was designed by William Railton, an architect most famous for designing Nelson’s column.

Several gardens will serve refreshments such as teas and home-made cakes.

Jo Poultney, who is opening her traditional cottage garden at the event said, “The best things about our open gardens is the variety – and the gardeners are just as interesting as the gardens themselves.

The people of the village who open up their gardens are always happy to chat and share a few gardening tips.”

Most gardens are open 2pm - 6pm on both days. Entrance to the gardens is via a passport which costs £5 per person, and can be purchased on the day. All proceeds to the church.

Wysall

VILLAGE HITS. The website organised by Wysall and Thorpe Parish Council continues to attract lots of visitors, members have been told.

Visitor stats during the month of April showed 1311 total hits generated by 858 unique individual visitors.

Following the major increase in March with the introduction of a Facebook feed, which could have driven additional non-social media visitors to the site to share latest information, levels were significantly down but still ahead of those pre-Facebook earlier in the year.

The total number hits on the site in the period May last year to April this year was 15,107
