Hoping to follow in footsteps of Rolls Royce

TWO “major companies” are set to join Rolls Royce and move into Loughborou­gh’s new science park, according to the university’s vice chancellor.

Professor Robert Allison was the guest speaker at the latest SARG (Storer and Ashby Area Residents’ Group) meeting and spoke of plans for the future of the university - including what is in the pipeline for the Loughborou­gh University Science and Enterprise Park.

Professor Robert Allison was the guest speaker at the latest SARG (Storer and Ashby Area Residents’ Group) meeting and spoke of plans for the future of the university - including what is in the pipeline for the Loughborou­gh University Science and Enterprise Park.

He said: “Many of you may remember the closure of AstraZenec­a and how many parts of the town were left looking very tired and there was lots of empty properties.

“We opened the innovation centre - which is completely full now and now we’ve got to go through the planning permission process as two companies have explicitly said they want to come to Loughborou­gh.

“One of the buildings is to be over 3,000 square metres in the area of pharmaceut­icals. That means new jobs will be coming to Loughborou­gh.

“Another one, which is under negotiatio­n still, is confidenti­al.

He said: “Rolls Royce are moving to Loughborou­gh and that will mean more significan­t growth in jobs in town.

“As you come off Ashby Road, you will be able to see the Rolls Royce logo once the building is up

“Some of the Rolls Royce Trent Engine was actually invented at the university. decidedmen­t “And for now researchfu­ture Rolls enginesand Royce develop- shouldhas take place at the Enterprise Park. “It is to be a collaborat­ion between Rolls Royce and the university, and the Government has invested £10.5m in the centre. “It is to bring money to the town and Rolls Royce is a blue chip company. “For Loughborou­gh to be assisting with this I hope you agree is a good thing.” The university states preliminar­y work began on the facility in August and it is expected the cen.tre will be operationa­l in early 2018. The centre is to include new laboratory and office space.
