Phoenix sides reach the Nationals
LOUGHBOROUGH Phoenix Bowls Club will be representing Leicestershire for the first time in the National Finals at Leamington in August after two of their entries successfully won their way through to the Bowls Leicestershire Finals to be played on July 30.
The rink of Charles White, Charlie Smith, Jim Keogh and skip Will Brune defeated the New Lount rink skipped by Michael Simpson 23-19 and later in the day, the Triple of Jeff Howlett, Terry Whiteside and skip Jim Keogh had a comfortable 23-7 win against Phil Faulkner’s trio from Hinckley Sweet Pea BC.
Earlier in the week the Mens’ Over 60’s side travelled to Measham in the Coalville League and returned with a 51-40 win (M Reeves 15-14, C White 20-10, C Smith 16-16) whilst the Ladies played a friendly match at Glenfield Ladies, losing 43-45 (A Billson 11-17, J Lee 14-16, D Price 18-12).
On Thursday the club played a very strong Holwell Sport in the National Double rinks where Holwell proved too good on the night, Jim Keogh’s rink losing 9-22 to Neil Hope and Will Brunes rink going down 16-25 to Chris Rogers.
On the same night, and despite having an under strength team in the Loughborough League, the Phoenix Flyers had an excellent 77-41 (8-2) win at Mountsorrel against Soar Valley.
In the County Cup Barlestone were unable to field a side and conceded the game giving Phoenix a walk over into the next round.
With two games over the weekend the Saturday team travelled to Leicester to play Goodwood BC and despite winning on two rinks, drawing on three and losing on one, it was Goodwood who won the match by two shots 94-92 whilst on Sunday the club entertained The Tigers BC at Bowling Green Way and had a good win 89-60.
Anyone interested in learning to play bowls can come along to the club on a Friday evening from 6pm where equipment and coaching can be provide free of charge, just wear some flat soled trainers. Male or female, 9 to 90+, all are welcome.
