The Great Get Together

LOUGHBOROUGH is joining many other towns, cities and communities across the whole of the UK for a special event in the name of the murdered MP Jo Cox.

Picturesque Queen’s Park in Loughborough town centre will again be the focus of a major community event this weekend.

Loughborough is hosting its own Great Get Together this Sunday (June 18), one year on from the brutal murder of Labour MP Jo Cox, shortly before the EU Referendum.

Loughborough Council of Faiths, Loughborough Peace Group, Hope Not Hate and Charnwood Arts are combining forces to stage a ‘wonderful celebration of community solidarity and friendship’ from 2pm to 5pm.

Everyone is invited to bring a picnic and celebrate all we hold in common – a theme warmly endorsing the thinking of Jo Cox.

There will be music in the bandstand courtesy of the Charnwood Concert Band from 2pm to 3.30pm, entertainment by the Bare Bones Morris dancers and frisbee and yoga thrown in. Visitors will also have their chance to send messages of hope and friendship on the whiteboard.

David Paterson, one of the organisers, said: “Communities are gathering across the country this weekend.

“At this time of great uncertainty and fear in the world, we are celebrating the fact that we have more in common than that which divides us.”
