Contemporary art project
A TWO-day event, which explored the relevance of the pamphlet for contemporary art practice, took place in Loughborough at the end of last month.
For & Against: Art, Politics and the Pamphlet, an event organised by Loughborough University’s contemporary arts programme Radar, hit the town on Friday, May 26, and Saturday, May 27.
Throughout the 20th Century artists have engaged provocatively with text, images and performance, publishing writings, pamphlets, and manifestos that challenge the status quo.
For & Against responded to research about this work conducted by Loughborough University academics.
The first day of the event, at Fearon Hall, took the form of a symposium and featured presentations and rants by a wide variety of artists and pamphlet makers.
Saturday was ‘Pamphlet Day’ and events took place at Charnwood Museum, Loughborough Library, Queen’s Park and in Lough- borough Market Place.
The day saw live performative elements by artists commissioned by Radar and a ‘market’ of stalls where members of the public participated in the making of new pamphlets, zines and protest paraphernalia.
During the event an exhibition titled ‘The Art of the Pamphlet’ was launched at Charnwood Museum.
This exhibition, curated by Gillian Whitely, explores the local, private and public collections of pamphlets.
It will be at the museum until Sunday, June 25.
