Busy programme produces mixed weekend for Loughborou­gh Phoenix Bowls Club

AN EXCELLENT run took Rosemary North of Loughborou­gh Phoenix Bowls Club to the semi final of the Bowls Leics 2 wood singles where she lost out on the last end in the play off for the third place, and thereby just missed out on representi­ng Leicesters­hire in the National Finals at Leamington.

There was mixed success for the clubs ladies in the second round of the County Triples, where Ann Billson, Clair Morris and Dot Price went out to Quorn whilst the trio of Rosemary North, Jan Beasley and Carol Neal-Broughton defeated Ibstock 27-9 and will now play Carol Smith of Loughborou­gh Greenfield­s in the third round.

Spa Lane Hinckley were the visitors in the Ladies Unbadged double rinks on Saturday and it was the visitors who progressed into the next round with a comfortabl­e win on both rinks.

In the Bowls Leics Mens Pairs there was no luck for any of the clubs three pairings, the fancied pairing of Will Brune and Jim Keogh went out at Wymeswold to Bill Ward, Alan North and Danny Hilferty lost heavily to Darren Delahey of Earl Shilton Kingscroft 6-19 and the pairing of Charlie Smith and Chas White went out against Bill Hobart and Mick Haywood also of Kingscroft.

The Mens Unbadged double rinks travelled to play New Lount in the first round of the competitio­n and returned home victorious 51-31 thanks to good wins by Chas Smith’s rink 28-15 against B Aldridge and Mick Reeve’s rink 23-16 against M Jarvis,they will now travel to Lutterwort­h to play Wycliffe BC in the next round.

There was success all round in the club matches, with the Coalville League team beating Coalville “B” 59-48 Chas Smith 26-19 up, Dave Barker 20-15 and Chas White going down 13-14.

This was followed by a good win for the ladies against Syston in a friendly on Wednesday, Jan Beasley 32-5, Dot Price 17-16 and Ann Billson 10-23 teaming up to give the ladies an overall winning score of 59-44. In the weekend club games, the Saturday team travelled to Shepshed and returned home with a comfortabl­e 116-68 win ( W Brune 23-7, T Whiteside 25-11, R Forster 19-10, A North 23-13, D Hilferty 12-12 and M Reeves 14-15) and this was followed on Sunday with an emphatic 117-66 win at Bowling Green Way against Fosseway from Syston where all five rinks won (A Billson 18-14, C White 22-19, M Reeves 34-10, T Whiteside 19-14, D Hilferty 24-9).
