Wymeswold’s win sequence ended by last ball of match

-

WYMESWOLD’S winning run since the start of the season came to an end when they lost a nervy encounter with Lowdham in the South Notts Cricket League Division F off the very last ball.

Rob Pitman’s side had batted first, with Pitman himself making 46 in an 88-run opening partnership with Dan Barry (39), before the wickets tumbled and the score was soon 117 for 7. A partial recovery with 22 from Paul Brain saw Wymeswold end with a just-abouta-dequate 157 for 8 from 45 overs.

Lowdham’s reply was going well, but three wickets for Dan Barry (3 for 34) saw the game swing Wymeswold’s way and a tight finish was in prospect. The visitors needed three to win from the last over, but tight bowling and fielding saw the Notts side needing two from the last ball, but it was hit for four and Wymeswold’s winning run in Division F came to an end.

In the ‘Robert Whowell and Partners’ Division M of the league it was 14-year-old Ben Wells who took the honours with bat and ball on his debut as Wymeswold 2nd xi slipped to a 72-run defeat at Lowdham 2nds.

The home side batted first and hit 186 for 7 from 40 overs, with youngster Wells making his senior team debut and taking 4 for 24. Wymeswold’s reply got off to a poor start and they were soon 29 for 4 before Wells (18) and skipper Rik Matthams (37) added some respectability, before the Wolds side were bowled out for just 114.
