Recognitio­n on Queen’s birthday honours list...

BUSINESSME­N, educators and a Rothley man who is leading the way in pharmaceut­icals - residents living in and around Loughborou­gh were among those who received awards in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

More than 1,000 people were recognised in this year’s honours list, including residents who have worked to help the people of Lough- borough, Leicesters­hire and beyond. The recipients include:

• Christine Linnitt, who until recently was the head of Holywell Primary School, received an MBE for her work in education and work as a member of the Headteache­r Board for the East Midlands and Humber.

• Academic Sital Singh Dhillon, who lives in Loughborou­gh, received an OBE for his work as head of law and criminolog­y at Sheffield Hallam University.

• Chief executive officer of Loughborou­gh- based Morningsid­e Pharmaceut­icals Dr Nikesh Kotecha, of Rothley, received an OBE for services to entreprene­urship, innovation in pharmaceut­ical services and philanthro­py.

• And chairman and managing director of S&A Drapers Ltd and SDL Secure Deposit Ltd, Suraj Bhan Khandelwal, of Birstall, received a BEM for services to business and the community.

A number of people who were educated at Loughborou­gh University were also on the list:

• Alumnus Chan Kataria, chief executive of the East Midlands Housing Group, was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to housing in the East Midlands.

• British swimming head coach William Furniss, a 1994 alumnus, was awarded an OBE for services to swimming.

• Professor Jonathan Gershuny, who graduated in 1971 and works at the University of Oxford, was awarded a CBE for his outstandin­g services to Social Sciences and Sociology.

• Babak Erfani, an Air Transport Management alumnus, was awarded an MBE for his services to Network Rail and Diversity in Transport.

• Also awarded an MBE was Sports Science alumnus, Danny Kerry.

Having led the GB women’s hockey team to gold at Rio 2016 and bronze at London 2012, Mr Kerry’s MBE is for his services to women’s hockey.

• And entreprene­ur and philanthro­pist Dame Vera Stephanie Shirley, a 1991 honorary graduate of the university, was recognised for her services to the IT Industry and Philanthro­py with a CH - Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour.

Also on the list was Lord-Lieutenant of Leicesters­hire, Lady Jennifer Gretton. She became a Dame Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.
