GARDEN CLUB. The June meeting of the Kegworth & District Garden Club was held at the meeting room Kegworth Village Hall on Thursday 1st June.

The speaker for the evening was Tracey Akehurst and her subject was “Pickled, potted and canned”.

Tracey began by explaining that various substances have been used as preservatives since ancient times, eg the Egyptians used honey even in the preservation of the dead.

Another early form of preserving was drying eg sultanas currants peas beans and lentils. Salt was also used in the drying process of preservation and also used in brine to pickle vegetables.

Vinegar (sour wine ) is also used. Canned Heinz baked beans first came onto the market in 1928 and Tomato ketchup was invented in America in 1782. Alcohol and sugar are also well known preservatives.

In modern times canned fruit and vegetables are common as are use of freezers in the use of keeping food for long periods of time.

Raffle winners for the evening included Gill Carty, Richard Waddington, Delia Assell-Haigh Karen Parrott and Ray Webb.

At the beginning of June it was ‘National Volunteer Week’ and we wanted to treat all those involved with KCL to something a little special in recognition of all the hours they happily give to provide a free lending library to our community. As you can imagine our budget was very, very small and we had 30+ people to cater for.

The Yew Lodge gallantly came to our rescue and generously co-funded a wonderful ‘Afternoon Tea’ on 11th June. A very BIG Thank You to Heather Thornton and the team at Yew Lodge.

During the afternoon the Friends of KCL Lottery was drawn and the winning numbers were 108, 84 and 20. Congratulations if one of those is your number and many thanks to all the members of the lottery which provides a vital income to keep the library running.

The next draw will be in December and so if you’d like to be in it please pick up an application form from the library or download one from our website www.kclweb.org
