Morale boosting win for Quorn

-

SATURDAY saw struggling Quorn visit Sileby Town 3rd XI.

Sileby captain, Pete Wilcocks won the toss and had no hesitation in batting on a good looking wicket, but Ross Errington struck with the second ball of the match, clean bowling Connor Simon for a duck.

Rob Scullion came in and immediately went on the attack, being particularly savage on Errington, hitting five fours in a 22 ball 33. Adam Lee (3-33) clean bowled Wilcocks for six and induced Scullion to get a leading edge for a return catch. James Preston looked to continue in aggressive mode, hitting 34 runs before Jamie Richardson had him caught and bowled.

Richardson (2-28) and Andy Kenneth (4-19) continued to make regular inroads into the Sileby innings as successive batsmen came and went looking to play “no fear” cricket.

When Nathan Preston (15) holed out to Adam Lee, on the long off boundary in the 31st over, Sileby had subsided to 1378. Captain Kenneth, bowling his off spin round the wicket, spearing the ball into the batsmen’s pads, was in no mood to let the home side off the hook and when he had Chris Preston caught at midwicket, Sileby had subsided to 140 all out, leaving 13 of their overs unused.

Like Sileby, Quorn lost a wicket in their first over, when Chris Preston bowled Ben Ragg for two. Andy Kenneth (26) and Jamie Richardson (22) batted sensibly, guiding Quorn to tea looking comfortably placed on 60-1.

After tea, Quorn wobbled, as Nathan Preston (2-23) snared Kenneth and Richardson LBW, before a brisk Chris Cooper innings was curtailed for just 14, leaving Quorn 79-4.

Quorn’s batting failures in recent weeks might have led to some trepidation amongst the middle order, however Dominic Watts and Richard Cooper came together to put on an undefeated 64 run partnership, to see their side home. Left handed Watts (33 not out) drove aggressively down the ground, while Cooper (32 not out) was particularly savage on anything short.

Next week, Electricity Sports are the visitors to Caves field and Quorn will look to build on this improved batting performance, as they try to pull away from the relegation zone.
