Aikines-Aryeetey in top form for Team GB in Lille
LOUGHBOROUGH’S Harry Aikines-Aryeetey put in a great performance in Lille at the weekend at the European Athletics Team Championships.
Aikines-Aryeetey won the men’s 100m, holding off the challenge of Germany’s Julian Reus and Churandy Martina of the Netherlands to cross the line in a time of 10.21.
And later he was back in action as he joined his teammates in the 4x100m relay where the British quartet of CJ Ujah, Zharnel Hughes, Danny Talbot and Aikines-Aryeetey set a championship record en route to victory, finishing with a world class time of 38.08.
Afterwards Zharnel Hughes said: “It’s my second time running with the relay squad and to come away with a victory and a championship record I’m really grateful. The guys did what they had to do, we’ve worked on our check marks a lot lately in Loughborough so the guys know what they had to do and we came out here and executed and I have fun working with these guys.”
Other Loughborough performances saw David Omoregie secure third place in the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.36 as Orlando Ortega of Spain equalled the championship record with his winning time of 13.20.
The women’s 4x400m team of Emily Diamond, Laviai Nielsen, Kirsten McAslan and Anyika Onuora finished in fourth place with a time of 3:28.96, while in the throws, a best throw of 69.30m placed Sophie Hitchon fourth in a tight women’s hammer competition as the British team finished in fourth place overall.
