‘That’s me standing there with the Shirley Temple hair’

-

“I AM CERTAIN that I am the little girl in the picture,.

“I am sure it is me because of the Shirley Temple hair do.”

A Looking Back reader has said that she thinks she was the little girl caught “people watching” from her spot in Moira Street in a mystery photo sent in to Looking Back.

Jane Kent (nee Whitelaw), 72, from Quorn said that she used to live at the first house in Moira Street, and that her spot just outside of the Coopers Arms pub was where she would people watch for hours, and she is certain that it is her in the vintage still.

Jane told Looking Back that she would just be nosey and watch as people went by on their daily business from that spot in Moira Street, and that it “must” be her in the photo.

Jane said that her aunty Dorothy ‘Dol’ Waldron was the landlady at the Coopers Arms and that she remembers going into the pub, but not being allowed into the actual bar area and always had to sit in the living room.

Jane said that she also remembers being crowned the Coronation Queen for Loughborough in 1953, and said that Alderman Alan presented her with a crown, and that it was his daughter that was doing the judging.

Because of the long hours that she spent people watching Jane said that she knew everyone up and down Moira Street including the Grape family, who had three daughters, Marlene, Alga and Syl- via, and Jane was even bridesmaid for Alga.

Jane said that one day the three sisters were discussing what colour their bridesmaid’s dresses were going to be and Jane said to them “Well what colour is my dress going to be?” and that led to her being made a bridesmaid.

She said that Marlene (the youngest of the sisters) used to be her best friend, and that she still receives a Christmas card from her, even though they moved out of Loughborough many years ago.

Jane also remembers Dr Norman, who used to work at Broadbent and Campbell surgery, and more importantly she remembers his Jaguar sports car.

Jane said that the doctors was on Leicester Road but backed onto Moira Street and she said that she was friends with Dr Norman’s daughter and that as he would drive out of the surgery he would often take her for a spin in the car.

Jane also remembered a number of other families in Moira Street, including the Tedds, the Evans’ along with Blackwells the fruiterers, and the box factory that has been mentioned by other Looking Backers who used to live in the street.

Do you remember any of the families mentioned by Jane?
