Beacon Inn fun day is a big success

-

MORE than £1,000 was raised at a fun day for the hospital which treats a seven-year-old Shepshed girl who is in need of a kidney transplant.

The fun day at The Beacon Inn, Loughborough, raised funds for the renal unit (Ward E17) at Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre where Lucy Syrett-Barsby, of Church Street, is cared for.

Lucy’s grandma Pat Barsby organised a raffle to raise money for the hospital but the idea snowballed into a fun day.

A total of £3,000 was raised at the event - the raffle raised £1,066 for the hospital, and the rest of the money will go towards converting Lucy’s bedroom.

Pat told the Echo the day was enjoyed by all who attended and there were cake stalls, face painting, a tombola, bouncy castles, games and a barbecue.

She told the Echo: “All raffle prizes were donated by local companies which we really appreciated and the people that sold the raffle tickets, without their help and contribution it would not have been as successful as it was.

“Everyone that came said it was a wonderful day and it saw everyone pull together.”

Following the fun day, Lucy, a St Botolph’s CE Primary School pupil, presented a cheque to Ward E17 manager Michelle Kirkland and Roy Connell, the clinical nurse specialist for dialysis.

Lucy was diagnosed with stage 5 chronic kidney disease last year and is in need of a transplant.

Lucy’s parents hope a live donor will come forwards as live organs tend to function longer than those from a dead donor.

Until a suitable kidney is found, Lucy must endure 10 hours of dialysis every night.

Information on becoming a live donor can be found at: www.nhs.uk
