A LOUGHBOROUGH development which looks to enable older people to remain independent, is set to open this September.

A report, presented to Leicestershire County Council Cabinet last week, outlined the council’s commitment to investing in more extra care housing for older people and updated councillors on Waterside Court.

The meeting heard how work is well underway on the new 62-flat development, in Derby Road, Loughborough. Leicestershire County Council has invested £1.56m in the £10.86m scheme led by East Midlands Housing Group (emh) - and Charnwood Borough Council has invested £150,000.

A spokesperson from emh group told the Echo Waterside Court combines independent housing with 24-hour access to a team of on-site care professionals. Once completed, it is to provide a home to 72 people aged 55 and over who need at least three-and-a-half hours of care each week.

There are 10 two-bed and 52 one-bed apartments for social rent and each apartment has a private outdoor space or balcony and access to a dementia-friendly sensory garden.

The lot is situated between the Grand Union Canal and a new residential development of 34 homes, also owned and managed by emh group. Both are opposite 88 Derby Road, Loughborough.

Chan Kataria, chief executive of emh group, said: “Waterside Court’s aim is to keep residents fit and active for as long as possible and promote independence.

“It’s more than just creating a great place to live; it’s about providing the right kind of personal support that residents may need.”
