Discus Dan misses out on podium

-

THERE was no medal for threetime world champion Dan Greaves in the men’s F44 discus final.

Lying fifth overall heading into round six, Greaves produced his best throw of 57.01m to move up to fourth overall, agonizingly short of the 57.33m recorded by Ivan Katanusic in the preceding throw – a personal best when it mattered most for the Croatian.

Greaves was disappointed with the outcome: “I’m very heartbroken; it wasn’t the performance I know I am capable of so it is really tough for me. I don’t know why because I felt in great shape and was warming up nicely with a 59m throw but that’s elite sport sometimes. It is just heart breaking when you know you are better than that performance.

“I know I have been around for a long time, and I have had some great success. I’ve got a family now but I have got to go away and think about this performance because you can’t get emotionally wrapped up in it. I don’t want to bow out on that performance and this feeling.”

F35 shot put action saw Sam Ruddock in action. After opening up with 12.09m, he went on to post 12.84m and 12.71m in rounds two and three respectively to leave himself contending well with the heavyweights of the class.

With things seemingly on the up with each passing round, three successive fouls in rounds four to six meant Ruddock would have to settle for seventh place finish.

“I wish the competition had gone better for me. My training has been going superbly so I am disappointed with the end result – I would love to have thrown further.

“The atmosphere was just stunning. The noise in my sixth round today in the shot put was something else. It is a moment I’ll never forget and I’ll cherish forever.”

Kieran Tscherniawsky recored 9.28m in the men’s F33 shot put final to finish fifth in a competition won by Kamel Kardjena of Algeria.

“I am really pleased with my performance and the distance is an big improvement from Rio. I was consistent and that is all I can ask for; I did my best.”

There was disappointment for Zac Shaw in the T12 100m as he made the semi-finals but missed out a place in the final and will now turn his focus to the 200m on Wednesday.

“I’m not going to lie, I am pretty devastated. I came into these championships wanting to win a medal so to not make the final is upsetting.”
