Trio in action for Team GB
THREE teenage swimmers from Loughborough are in action across Europe this week, competing for Team GB in two different competitions.
Michaella Glenister (15) and William Bell (15) are in Hungary this week as part of the Team GB for the Gyor 2017 European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF), while Lucy Sharp (16) is part of the GB team at the Deaflympics in Turkey.
The festival in Hungary got underway on Sunday (July 23) and finishes on Saturday (July 29).
Glenister was amongst the first in action, finishing fifth in the 400m individual medley final.
“I’m really happy,” said Glenister after moving up from eighth to fifth in the final.
“My heat was a good swim but I thought I did even better in the final. I really wanted to pick up the back end, I knew my breaststroke was a bit weak in the heats so I thought if I improved that I might get a PB. It hurt in the final stages but felt so good at the end.”
Glenister was back in action on Tuesday as the Echo went to press along with William Bell.
The Deaflympics in Turkey run from July 18 - July 30 and saw Sharp compete in the 50m and 100m backstroke and 50m and 100m freestyle.
On Friday in the 100m backstroke Sharp was eliminated in the heats with a time of 1.15.02, and on Monday in the 50m backstroke she just missed out on a place in the final with a time of 33.97 and in the 50m freestyle missed out in the heats with a time of 29.40.
She is set to compete in the 100m freestyle event on Wednesday morning.
