ATM raid at store
A SUPERMARKET in Mountsorrel was raided as thieves attempted to steal a cash machine with staff members still in the store.
Police are investigating the incident that took place around 11.30pm on Thursday, July 20.
Police told the Echo that thieves broke into the Waitrose store in Granite Way, Mountsorrel and attempted to steal the ATM.
A spokesperson from Leicestershire Police said that thieves gained access to the store and used a Toyota 4X4 vehicle to pull the ATM from inside the premises, however it was left unopened at the scene and the thieves made off empty handed.
A member of the public who was shopping in the store contacted the Echo and said that they had spoken to staff and they said they had locked themselves in the cash room when the incident started, and that the thieves failed to get away with the cash machine or the cash inside it.
The member of the public said: “There’s a large hole in the front of the Waitrose store and a missing cash machine from inside.”
The Echo contacted Waitrose however the store declined to comment.
A spokesperson from Leicester- shire Police told the Echo: “Police are investigating an attempt to steal an ATM from a store in Mountsorrel.
“Officers were called at around 11.30pm on Thursday, July 20, to a report that the store was broken into and an attempt was made to steal the ATM.
“Thieves gained access to the store and a Toyota 4X4 vehicle was used to pull the ATM from inside the premises however it was left unopened at the scene and the thieves made off empty handed.
“Enquiries into the incident are ongoing. If anyone witnessed the attempted theft or saw a dark coloured Audi arriving at or leaving the scene, please contact us.
“Anyone with any information is asked to contact 101, quoting crime number 17*310388.”
