50 years ago... Bomb alert by youths

TWO youths from Whitwick spotted what they thought was an unexploded bomb amongst scrubland on the slopes of Iveshead near Shepshed, and reported their find to the police.

Personnel from the R.A.O.C Bomb Disposal Unit from Nottingham went to investigate the scene and they found a 20lb spigot mortar practice bomb about two feet in length and put it into a vehicle for later disposal.

The bomb was dusty and full of sand with a hole in its side.

Iveshead was used during the war for Home Guard training purposes and it was believed the bomb was a relic from this time.

Water not fit to drink

“IF IT gets no better I will see the Minister of Health personally.”

That is what one Anstey resident told the parish council, after they heard that water in the Bradgate Road area of the village was not fit to drink - in tea or anything else.

The complaint was raised by Mr R Willett, who claimed that the water tainted all cooking and that any white clothes he washed in it came out a “lovely brown colour.”

Morley hits 106no

THE ECHO Press made Shepshed Messengers rue their missed chances as Echo Press opener Roger Morley went on to hit 106 not out - despite being dropped on the second ball.

Morley hit 17 fours and one six on his way to a century, and was given good support by J. Darmon, R. Wilkinson and A. Ellis as his side went on to win by 70 runs.

Do you have memories of either of the clubs involved? Maybe you have played for Shepshed Messengers and have stories of hitting huge sixes or smashing the stumps out of the ground?
