League leaders Wymeswold Wolds slip to surprise defeat but Shepshed Rams fail to take advantage

IN THE Loughborou­gh & District Bowls League Monday Division 1, leaders Wymeswold Wolds had a surprise defeat at home to Phoenix Pegasus, going down 44-50 (2-6) but maintain their gap at the top as Shepshed Rams also lost, Syston Fosseway doing the damage in a tight game 49-46 (6-2).

East Leake Willows had a comfortabl­e home win against Queens Park Queens, winning 78-38 (6-2). As things stand at the moment, St Margaret’s Maggies find themselves relegated after their 33-73 (0-8) defeat at Birstall Lighthouse.

In Division 2 last week’s leaders Syston White Plum found themselves on the wrong side of a 36-65 (2-6) score on their visit to St Margaret’s Saints and find themselves in second place, three points above Saints.

New leaders Quorn Weavels defeated Greenfield­s Badgers 49-37 (6-2) to continue their challenge for the top spot whilst Thringston­e Woodpecker­s moved away from the threat of relegation with a comfortabl­e 65-38 (8-0) win at home to Brush Hawks.

Belgrave Cygnets were up against it from the start of their game with Brush Peregrines when they could only field two rinks, and ended the game on the wrong side of a 40-31 (6-2) score line, and also had the mandatory two point deduction for an incomplete team.

Match of the day in Division 3 saw the top two clash at Kegworth where the home side beat Soar Valley Avons 54-37 (6-2) to extend their lead at the top, but the defeat for the Avons allowed Birstall Sands to take over second place after they had a 54-48 (6-2) victory at Phoenix Kingfisher­s. Rothley Crusaders travelled to Holt Drive where home team Greenfield­s Foxes were beaten in a close game, Crusaders taking the points 49-43 (6-2).

Sutton Bonington Riversider­s continue to lead Division 4 after a close win 45-43 (6-2) at Syston Green & Royals whilst Sileby Swallows remain in second place after a very comfortabl­e 73-35 (8-0) away win at strugglers Soar Valley Conways. Wymeswold Steamers continue to chase the leading group picking up valuable points after they defeated Shepshed Lambs 88-44 (6-2) at Charnwood Road. After a good start to the season Belgrave Ringers finally collected their first points for the second half of the season despite being beaten at home by Fosseway Romans 28-65 (2-6).

It was the quarter finals of the Thursday Trophy this week and last year’s winners New Lount Hares successful­ly booked their place in the semi-final on August 24 with a comfortabl­e 10-0 win at Loughborou­gh Greenfield­s. Hares now have an away tie at Brush Eagles who defeated Sileby Swifts from Division 2 8-2. Syston Fosseway hosted their game against Shepshed North, winning 8-2 to secure a home game with Phoenix Flyers of Division 3 who defeated Division 2 side Queens Park Carilloner­s.

In the fifth and last Loughborou­gh & District Charity Cup of the season, Thringston­e BC won the West Cup with +44 shots with Sileby BC second +34. The full result was: 1st Thringston­e +44, 2nd Sileby +34, 3rd Wymeswold +6, 4th Phoenix -1, 5th Quorn -7 (+5 on extra ends), 6th Syston -7 (+3 on extra ends), 7th Greenfield­s -15, 8th New Lount -27 (+6 on extra ends), 9th Queens Park -27 (+4 on extra ends).
