Loughborough University FC put up good display in defeat against Worcester

MIDLAND FOOTBALL LEAGUE WORCESTER CITY 2 LOUGHBOROUGH UNI FC 1

IN front of a crowd of close on 350 Loughborough Uni FC put up a good fight against much fancied Worcester City at the home of Bromsgrove with whom Worcester now ground share.

Although this result went against them there are signs the Uni are getting to grips with the game at this level and they could take heart from their performance.

Playing against the slope in the first half the Loughborough lads had to battle hard to keep Worcester at bay whilst trying to create chances on the counter attack with Cameron Gordon along with Alex Read and Alex Dinsmore putting in great effort on a hot summer’s afternoon.

However, in the main it was a rearguard battle for the Student’s with central defence pairing of Joel Bonner and Jacob Croud doing their upmost against a far more experienced attack.

The Students were doing most things right until midway through the half when a corner came into the box and the defenders seemed to leave the ball for someone else allowing Worcester to poke the ball home and thus take the lead. It’s in situations such as this that the Scholars need to be more aware but that is something which will surely come as they get used not just to each other but also the level they’re playing at.

Although they had the advantage of the slope after the break it was still a case of keeping Worcester at a safe distance and still trying to hit the home side on the break. Cameron Gordon, the Uni centre forward must have covered every part of the pitch searching for the opportunity that just didn’t fall his way before being replaced by Boachie.

Unfortunately for the Student’s they did what they’ve done previously in the early part of the season and gave away possession in their own half allowing a Worcester forward to race away and hammer home a superb strike that gave Jake King no chance whatsoever in the Uni goal.

With 15 minutes remaining Christian Eneremadu looped a shot over the home ‘keeper to get the Scholars back into the game and they did all they could to try and salvage a point.

Although they did have King to thank for at least keeping them in the hunt when he pulled off a stunning penalty save close to the end of the game.
