Help offered to revamp car with life-saving kit

- By Megan Cox megan.cox@trinitymirror.com

A CASTLE Donington man who is set to become a medical first responder, is raising funds so he can kit his car with life-saving equipment.

And community organisations and many residents have given him a helping hand in his mission.

Ray Woolley is hoping people will donate to his GoFundMe page so he can raise enough money for a defibrillator with three-lead ECG, which costs around £2,000, and other equipment.

Ray, who currently works as an ambulance technician, started as a community first responder but decided he wanted to progress to be a medical first responder due to their increased responsibilities.

He has been trained and approved to be a blue light driver in his own car and will volunteer his time around his existing duties.

Ray gets no funding to be a medical first responder so he started the fund-raising effort to gather the money necessary to equip himself and install blue lights and sirens to his car. He has already received support from many individuals as well as businesses including BH Associates, Hemington Golddiggers and Castle Printwear.

St Edward’s Primary School also supported his cause by holding a non-uniform day and Castle Donington Community College donated funds following its summer fete.

Donington Outdoors has also providing Ray with a satnav unit. Owner James May said: “In my opinion Ray is a local hero giving an amazing service to the area. It is something we all hope we will never need but the reality is that emergencies do happen. The question of helping Ray to help our community was a no-brainer.”

Once Ray is fully up and running his patch will centre on Castle Donington and the wider area including Melbourne, Breedon and Hathern.

During his visit to Donington Outdoors, Ray said: “I really appreciate the support.”
