AMAZING AMOUNT RAISED FOR RAINBOWS AT OPEN GARDEN WEEKEND. Barrow upon Soar raised a massive £5169 for Rainbows in the recent Open Garden Weekend held in the village.

This was a fantastic achievement shattering previous fund raising efforts by over £1,000 and was the result of good weather, lots of happy generous visitors, duckling hunting children, new gardens to explore, an improved programme and map, a great team, helpful shopkeepers, fabulous refreshments, quirky garden features such as a planted up pair of trousers and a greenhouse made out of an old shower - but most of all the hard work, dedication and passion of all the garden openers.

Thank you to everybody who made the weekend such a success.

Barrow upon Soar Open Gardens is currently planning another fabulous gardening event in the village on the Saturday, 30 September - it is a Chelsea Inspired Pop Up Garden which will be fun for all the family - watch out for more details very soon.

GARDENING CLUB. The Gardening Club starts up again with an illustrated talk from Gerald Price who is coming along to talk about Ancient Woodland and he believes that Gardening Clubs are one of the best audiences who can readily associate with many of the issues and challenges facing this valuable resource.

Gerald says that woodland is not just about trees but also multiple habitats for wildlife. Did we know that with tree cover of just 13%, the UK is well below the world average of 30 per cent.

Or that only a fifth of our woodland is classed as ancient. Gerald will talk about the work of the Woodland Trust and there will be a mention of the future and particularly the proposed Tree Charter to be launched in November on the 800th anniversary of the Carta de Foresta which was an appendix to the Magna Carta.

So an interesting talk on many levels.

The Gardening Club will meet on Wednesday, 20 September at 7.30pm in the Gap at the back of the Barrow upon Soar Baptist Church in Beveridge Street. I think there is a promise of something for all and everybody is very welcome, guests and visitors on the night just £3.

CHRYSANTHEMUM AND DAHLIA SHOW. On Saturday, 23, September, the Barrow upon Soar, Chrysanthemum and Dahlia Society hold their annual early show.

All the flowers are for sale and all proceeds go to Marie Curie care, a very worthwhile charity. Please come along and see how the growers compete. There will be somebody there to answer any questions about any kind of gardening.

It welcomes you on an intimate journey by flickering candlelight using expertly crafted songs, stories and humour to draw a picture of a forgotten era. Expect songs that will make you laugh, sing and even cry. Find yourself remembering first loves, lost loves and time gone by.

The gifted Mister Keith, ably assisted by his small “orchestra” of multi-instrumentalists will introduce you to the Victorian Parlour concert. Expect to play your part as you sing in his choir or help him create new songs and stories in front of your eyes.

BROADHILL ROAD OBJECTION. Kegworth parish council have objected to plans for a change of use of a dwelling house at 5 Broadhill Road in their village to a house in multiple occupation

The council say they object to the proposal as the scale of the development, with 8 rooms available for letting, is out of keeping with the existing dwellings in an established residential area.

They said the proposal will make an existing known traffic hazard substantially worse, with more cars parked on Broadhill, as there is inadequate provision made for parking on site.

Saying only three spaces can effectively be used by people in the eight HMO rooms.

They also say this type of accommodation is likely to be let by people working at the airport or vet students at the University of Nottingham; each is likely to own and use a car. The development will have a detrimental effect on the amenity of a listed building, as two of the bedrooms on the first floor and the bedroom in the roof space overlook the garden of the adjacent listed building at 59 High Street.

TURN UP WITH YOUR MEMORIES. Residents in Kegworth are being asked to search their minds and memorabilia and turn up at the village Museum on Sunday this weekend (September 10) to share their information with others.

The event between 10am and 4pm is aimed at people turning up with their memories of the village from yesteryear and Sheila Sharpe from the Museum says: “We are inviting everyone young and old to bring along their own memories of Kegworth - past and present – which will then be used in future editions of our annual magazine ‘Cogwords’ and form part of the museum’s continuing collection reflecting all aspects of Kegworth life.”

Mrs Sharpe says there will be lots of fun for the children during the day and they will be invited to get their fathers dressed up in the Kaggi costome they have and take a picture.

There will be a talk on the day at 2pm under the title ‘Keep the Cogs turning’ and as well as free entry there will be light refreshments served.

For further information contact Sheila Sharpe 01509 673613 or cranheafield@ gmail.com

Costock

NEW CURATE. The new Curate for the East Leake Benefice of Churches, the Rev Michael Allen, was preacher at the United Benefice Service of Holy Communion, held in Costock Village Hall. Refreshments were served after the service.

The church is to hold its Harvest Festival over the weekend of September 17 and 18.

The annual ser vice will be held on Sunday September 17 at 3pm and this will be followed on the Monday by the Harvest Supper in the village hall at 7pm. Tickets at £10 – to include drinks and the supper -- are available from Kath Owen and Gill Starmer.

DEMOLITION PLANS. Rushcliffe Borough Council have given planning permission for the relevan demolition of a dwelling at The Highway House, 1 Main Street, Costock to facilitate residential development at that address.

The parish council objected to an original application for four houses to be built on the site, expressing strong concerns that the proposal would introduce more traffic movements adjacent to the already dangerous crossroads where there have been fatalities.

The parish council said they felt if even one house was built in addition to the present one it would increase the road safety hazards there. They also felt the application would create an overdevelopment of the site.

The applicants are Cairns Heritage Homes.
