Two Labour councillors resign
TWO Labour borough councillors, who represent the same ward area, resigned over the weekend due to “family issues”.
At the start of the week Charnwood Borough Council announced that Anne Williams and Sarah Maynard Smith have both stepped down as councillors for the Loughborough Hastings ward.
The Echo has attempted to contact Ms Williams and Ms Maynard Smith but was yet to receive a response at the time of publication.
The Echo spoke with the leader of the borough council’s Labour Group, Coun Jewel Miah, and was told both councillors have stepped down due to personal reasons.
He said: “They both have been very hardworking councillors for the Loughborough Hastings ward and I thank them for the dedication shown to the ward and the Labour group.
“Unfortunately family issues have meant they have had to stand down but I totally understand the situation. I wish them all the best for the future.”
While the vacancies continue, residents within the Hastings ward - which covers roads such as Empress Road, Wharncliffe Road, and Great Central Road - can contact Democratic Services on 01509 634785 or email democracy@charnwood.gov.uk with any issues they would usually raise with a councillor.
A notice of vacancy has been issued by the borough council formally announcing the vacancies. If two electors in the borough call for a by-election, it will be held within 35 working days of that request and a date set.
Nominations for candidates can then be made during the period which will be specified in the Notice of Election. If more than two candidates are put forward then a poll will take place.
