Alarming trend over dogs after holidays

- Celine Di Crocco rehoming centre manager Dogs Trust Loughborough Hill Farm, Wide Lane, Leicestershire

DOGS Trust has identified an alarming trend which sees families hand their dogs into rescue centres as soon as their children go back to school.

In 2016 at the start of the new school year, the charity recorded one of the highest number of calls regarding handing over a dog on any one day of the year, with double the average number of calls we usually receive from struggling dog owners.

We suspect that some dog owners find the reality of returning to the working routine and juggling the school run sets in after the summer holidays, and feel they are no longer able to contend with an energetic pooch so pass them to rescue charities.

We hope that anyone finding their dog’s behaviour challenging after the summer holidays will consider giving them up as a last resort and instead sign up for one of the many local Dog School training classes held throughout the region at www.dogstrustdogschool.org. uk
