■ ■Shep­shed is lively com­mu­nity driven place with its own town coun­cil in the bor­ough of Charn­wood lo­cal author­ity.

■ ■It is the sec­ond big­gest set­tle­ment af­ter the town of Lough­bor­ough.

■Un­til 1888 it was of­ten known as Sheepshed and Sheepshead - names pos­si­bly de­rived from the vil­lage be­ing heav­ily in­volved in the wool in­dus­try or more sim­ply, ‘a hill where sheep graze’.

■The town has a num­ber of su­per­mar­kets, and hostel­ries and a pop­u­lar foot­ball team.
