Thieves broke into restaurant as people were asleep upstairs
THIEVES broke into a Loughborough restaurant and stole hundreds of pounds worth of wine and spirits while people slept upstairs.
Caravelli, the Italian restaurant in Sparrow Hill, is believed to have broken into between 11pm on Wednesday, September 20 and and 7am on Thursday, September 21, according to police.
Owner of the shop, Bruno Ambrico, 52, told the Echo that three thieves broke into the restaurant by smashing a glass window before looting the shop of wine, spirits, staff tips and an iPad.
He said that he watched CCTV footage and saw that they first broke in around 2am, and then left the store but returned at 5am with bags to carry the stolen items.
He said that he has had to replace around £400 worth of spirits including around 40 bottles of wine.
Bruno said that there were ten guests asleep upstairs in the rented rooms, but none of them heard what was going on below them.
He said: “I can’t really believe the nerve of the people who do things like this, I mean to have the cheek to break in and take what they took, it’s just not on.
“We’ve got five rooms and we were fully booked out last night so I’m just pleased that they didn’t try and go upstairs.
“You could see from the CCTV that they were just looking for a safe.
“They were wearing hooded jackets, but they looked like lightweight forensic coats that they would have been able to get rid off quickly.”
Bruno said that the alarm was first raised when staff came in at 7am to start preparing for breakfast, and that when he looked on CCTV he realised that the thieves had left only an hour earlier.
Leicestershire Police confirmed to the Echo that it received a report at 7.55am of a burglary at a property in Sparrow Hill, Loughborough.
A spokesperson said that items were believed to have been taken between 11pm on Wednesday, September 20 and 7am on Thursday, September 21.
Police said that enquiries are currently ongoing and that anyone with information about the incident can call 101.
