FA VASE SECOND QUALIFIYNG ROUND

HOLBROOK SPORTS 1 QUORN 2 QUORN won through to the next round of the FA Vase and Monday’s draw saw them given another away fixture at Bardon Hill Sports on October 21.

Quorn made one change to the side that won in the League Cup on Wednesday against Atherstone, Russell Hoult continued in goal and Ryan Thacker, who was unavailable on Wednesday took a place on the bench.

Skipper Niall Mather returned to partner Danny Chapman at the heart of the defence with Ryan Evans making his second start after his full debut in midweek.

Quorn started brightly and Evans put in a dangerous cross but the home side survived but were soon under pressure again, Nathan Dale having two efforts on goal that saw James Mitchison in compe- tent action, gathering cleanly on both occasions. Quorn continued to dominate and took the lead in the 14th minute, Nick Goold’s corner was won in the air by Evans and fell nicely to Dominic Brennan, who tucked home with his left foot from close range.

Quorn continued to dominate the game but a lapse of concentration allowed the home side their first chance but Hoult dived to his left to make the parry. Amarvir Sandhu did well to create an opening for Evans and his first effort with his left foot forced Mitchison to a fine save.

Holbrook were coming more into the game and made a quick counter attack that looked threatening until Rob Mulonga made a fine block at the expense of a corner, poor marking saw a fine header goal-bound until Mather rose to head over the bar. Quorn finished the half on top but failed to increase their lead.

Quorn were caught napping after the break and conceded a sloppy goal at the near post, a right-wing corner wasn’t cleared and Kyle Hazeldine nicked the ball over the line for the equaliser.

Quorn regained their momentum and Brennan burst on to a through ball, his well struck effort was deflected on to the bar by Mitchison to prevent the visitors regaining the lead.

Quorn continued to strive for the winning goal and eventually it arrived in the 86th minute, Goold’s in-swinging corner from the right was knocked clear by Mitchison under pressure but Evans thundered the loose ball into the roof of the net from the edge of the box.

Quorn saw out the final few minutes to go through to the next round.
