Astonished by Trump letter

-

I WAS was astonished to read Keith Perkins letter “Respect should be given to Trump” ( Echo Letters September 27) in which he asks “What would our reaction be if the American media published disgusting remarks about our Queen”.

Well if our Queen had boasted about groping the genitalia of members of the opposite sex, been an inveterate liar, discriminated against women, non Christians, gays, disabled and non white people, I would expect them to report it and relevant comments.

I would remind Mr. Perkins that Trump recently stated that some of those marching with white supremacists and neo-Nazis in Charlottesville, Virginia, chanting “Jews will not replace us”, were “very fine people” even though those demonstrations incited violence which resulted in a death.

By way of contrast NFL football players who chose to kneel, as a peaceful form of protest about police brutality against black people, during the national anthem were described by him as “sons of bitches”.

While I advocate this country becoming a republic, I have great respect for the personal attributes of the Queen and consider it to be an insult to our head of state to in any way equate her with (to use on old fashioned word) a cad such as Donald J. Trump.

I appreciate that many believe it to be essential that we cosy up to the U.S.A. if we are to make a success of Brexit, but I would prefer us to “Exit Brexit” and remain an influential member of the E.U. rather than become the “lap dog” of Donald J. Trump.
