BISHOP BEVERIDGE CLUB NEWS. This Friday, 6 October, Chair Yoga, aimed for those who need gentle exercise, starts at 3.15pm for one hour.

This is organised by Joanne Derbyshire from ‘Moon Warrior Yoga’ and is not by the club. The cost will be £5 per session, and we can have tea and biscuits afterwards for which a nominal charge will be made.

The sessions will be run for an initial six weeks to see how much support Joanne gets. Places for 20 and is aimed at the over 50’s who want gentle exercise. We will be taking names on our notice board or call Joanne on 07475 080062. Or just come along.

These session will be open to the public and if popular enough Joanne will take an extra class from 4.15pm.

The next coach outing will be on Monday, 9 October and is to Peterborou­gh. The cost to members is £12, for visitors who are most welcome the cost is £14. Our next Fun Quiz will be on Wednesday, 11 October, starting at 2.45pm, cost £1.50 for members, £2 visitors and includes tea and cakes. Prizes for the winning team. Everyone welcome.

Our next Monday Movie is ‘Another Mother’s Son’ on 16 October, details later. My error in last week’s Echo, the AGM is on 27 November, not the Film which will be ‘ The Sense of an Ending’ on Monday, 13 November. On 18 December the film is ‘My Cousin Rachel’.

The list for the first few months in 2018 will be available shortly but include ‘Dunkirk’, ‘ The Zookeepers Wife’, ‘Hampstead’ and ‘ Victoria and Abdul’. On Monday, 20 November we will be having Christmas Lunch at Birstall Golf Club. The cost to members including the coach and three course meal is £27, to non-members £29. Details shortly on the notice board.

We will need to know if you are going by car as the bus size will depend on numbers booking places. If you make your own way the cost will be reduced by £7, but make sure that note this at the time of booking.

Our visit to York will be on 11 December for the Christmas Festival. The outings list for 2018 will be available in the next Newsletter to be available at the Birthday Tea, or you get a copy from the Club now. The annual members free Birthday Tea is being held at The Gap on Wednesday, 25 October.

The booking list is on the notice board. You are reminded not to enter names of people who have not asked you to do so, we have so many ‘crossings off’ that it is difficult to keep track of numbers for catering.

We will be having a Christmas Fusion Art class on Wednesday, 8 November when you can choose different themed Christmas glass items to make. Starting at 2.30pm, basic cost is £10, plus materials.

For those wishing to know more about how useful the internet is for everyday lives and saving money, we will have a team from Barrow Library on hand from 10.30am on Thursday, 12 October attending the club weekly coffee morning.

We will have a number of lap tops for use by members and tuition is free. Come and see just how valuable a little knowledge will improve your lives. Also if you have internet access on your mobile phone we can show you how to easily use it. No booking required.

MOTHERS’ UNION. On Wednesday, 4 October, The Mothers’ Union is meeting in the Trinity rooms at 2.30pm. The Rev Pam Harvey is speaking about Believing, Belonging and Behaving.

LEICESTERS­HIRE METAL DETECTING SOCIETY. The metal detecting society is meeting at 7.15pm on Thursday, 5 October, in the Conservati­ve club function room.

SOAR BRIDGE INN REFURBISHM­ENT. Rob and Amie became the new tenants of the Soar Bridge inn in April, their intentions were to continue to run most aspects of the business, much the same as before.

The popular steak, curry, pie and fish nights have remained, as well as the Thursday quiz, pub games and petanque and skittles parties. Live fortnightl­y acoustic music has since been introduced on a Sunday afternoon.

Recently the outside of the pub has had a facelift, however the restaurant and function room are in need of some attention.

The plan is to widen and extend the restaurant, allowing more comfort for diners, to enable us to cater for larger parties.

The confirmed starting date is 9 October for the work to commence with an intended completion date of 17 November.

There will be an informatio­n board within the pub in forming of the plans, we will also keep you updated via our Facebook page.

Disruption will be kept as minimal as possible and we look forward to exciting times ahead!

BARROW PANTO GROUP PRESENTS THE SOUND OF MU… RDER. The Sound of Mu...rder by Andy Hawkes is a Murder Mystery about an amateur group rehearsing the Sound of Music which gives the audience an ideal opportunit­y to dress to impress in dirndls and lederhosen. The show is on: Friday , October 6, and begins at 7.30pm at Humphrey Perkins School.

Tickets are £12 each which includes a two course ploughman’s supper and the chance to interrogat­e the suspects.

CHAIR YOGA CLASS. On Friday, 6 October, an exciting new chair yoga class for the over 50’s is starting at the Bishop Beveridge club.

This will take place from 3:15pm – 4:15pm. This class will run weekly for a trial period of six weeks at a cost of £5 per person per session.

GET CRAFTY. Barrow Community Library on Friday, 6 October, between 1:30pm – 3pm.

A new weekly group for knitters, stitchers, crocheteer­s and other crafters of all ability levels. £1 donation suggested towards library funds. If Refreshmen­ts available.

MINI-MARKET AND COFFEE MORNING. On Saturday, October 7, the Methodist church is holding their minimarket and coffee morning, from 10am.

BUSCA BALLROOM DANCE. On Saturday, 7 October BUSCA has arranged a ballroom dance with just us at Humphrey Perkins community centre, 7:30 pm for 8 pm. Tickets available from the paper shop and the library.

VALUATION DAY AT THE COMMUNITY LIBRARY. Come along to a valuation day with Hansons regional valuer, Vanessa Savage. Why not have a clear out and get your small old items valued?

You never know what you might find. Barrow community library at North Street, Barrow upon Soar has arranged this event on Saturday, 7 October from 11.15am – 3.30pm. £2 per item towards library funds, light refreshmen­ts available.

Items may be left for inclusion into a forthcomin­g Hansons auction.

LIVE MUSIC AT THE SOAR BRIDGE. On Sunday, 8 October, come along and enjoy acoustic music by CJ Hatt the Soar Bridge between 5pm – 7pm.

BOOK SALE. Our book sale starts in the library on Monday, 9 October, all proceeds to Barrow library fund.

PETERBOROU­GH DAY TRIP. On Monday, 9 October organised by the Bishop Beveridge Club.

The cost to members is £12, and for visitors who are most welcome the cost is £14. We leave Sileby at 10am then onto Barrow pick-ups.

FUN QUIZ. The next quiz will be on Wednesday, 11 October at the Bishop Beveridge Club starting at 2.45pm.

Note that this is open to all, with the cost of £2 for visitors and £1.50 for members. No individual questions and hosted once again by Alan Willcocks and Roger Grew. Make up a table of four, or just come along and mix to form a team. Cost includes tea and cake.

MONDAY MOVIE. The Monday Movie on 16 October, starting at 2pm, screening at the Bishop Beveridge Club is ‘Another Mothers Son’. Based on the true story of Louisa Gould, the drama is set during World War II on the Nazioccupi­ed island of Jersey.

Lou took in an escaped Russian POW and hid him over the war’s course.

The tension mounts as it becomes clear that Churchill will not risk an assault to recapture the British soil, and the island-community spirit begins to fray under pressures of hunger, occupation and divided loyalty.

Against this backdrop, Lou fights to preserve her family’s sense of humanity and to protect the Russian boy as if he was her own.

Cost, including tea and cake, is £4.50 for visitors, £4 members. We have a full sized screen and the projection­ist is supplied by Centre Screen (Phoenix Theatre).

Sileby

COFFEE MORNING. On Saturday, (September 30), The Friends of St Gregory Church in Sileby held a Macmillan Coffee morning.

This was a great success and the magnificen­t sum of £500 was raised for this wonderful charity. Special thanks to CostCutter­s for their kind donation and to everyone who baked some amazing cakes as well as the people of Sileby and the surroundin­g villages who supported the event and made it such a worthwhile occasion.

SILEBY METHODIST CHURCH. A quiet week again but on Thursday, 28th September, the Treasurer told us that Sileby Parish Council have awarded us a grant of £1,000 toward the cost of our new boiler. We are so grateful for their generosity.

It was the Cafe@Chapel on Thursday and also on Saturday, 30th from 9.30am -11.30am and it is delightful to welcome our friends to these occasions, your continued support is most appreciate­d.

On Sunday, 1st October, Revd Jonathan Gichaara was our preacher and he spoke of how God, our Father, provides us with all our needs. As we had no pianist, Jonathan chose hymns we all knew and we harmonised and made a joyful noise to the Lord.

It was announced that the Harvest Festival raised £103:74p for the ‘Chirp for Joy’ campaign and we thank you for this tremendous support for such a worthwhile cause.

Next week, October 8, our Superinten­dent, Revd Andrew Lomax will be our preacher and will bring a Communion Service to us. We look forward to welcoming him.

On Saturday, 14th October, it will be our New and Nearly New Sale from 10am - 12pm with the usual coffee morning taking place.

Do please come along and support this effort, we feel you will find it most worthwhile.

Monday, 23rd, will see Tony and Gina Doore hosting one of their popular Soup & Pud lunches from 12.30pm and tickets are now available from Betty Bowman and Cafe@ Chapel.

Priced at £5 they are good value for money as generous portions are served.

BUNNY BULLETIN. Mr Christophe­r Paul is the new editor of the ‘Bunny Bulletin’, the village magazine supported by the parish council.

GARDENERS GROUP. The next meeting of the Bunny and District Gardeners Group is on Wednesday next week, October 11, when the speaker will be expert herbalist Mr C Powell and wo will have with him some of his seeds.

The meeting will be in the village hall and will start at 7.30pm. Visitors on the night are welcome with there being an admission charge of £3.

LOOKING FOR EXTRA PARISH COUNCILLOR. Bunny Parish Council are still looking for an additional extra member to be co-opted to take their membership up to the full figure of nine.

ST JAMES CHURCH. There will be a service of Holy Communion on Sunday, October 8 starting at 9.30am. Everyone is welcome to the service.

HEARING AID CLINICS. Do you wear hearing aids? Come along to our free walk-in hearing aid clinic for new batteries, new ear mould tubing, advice on equipment, advice on how to use and clean your hearing aids, and informatio­n on hearing loss and all the services that can help you. The clinic is held at Normanton on Soar Hall and is supported by fund-raising.

The next clinic will be on October 10, between 2pm - 3pm.

ST PETER’S PARISH CHURCH. All are warmly invited on the morning of Sunday, October 8, ( The Seventeent­h Sunday after Trinity) to the Parish Church of St Peter (Market Place) Mountsorre­l for a traditiona­l celebratio­n of the Holy Eucharist (with Hymns) at 10am.

The Celebrant will be the Parish Priest and coffee / tea will follow the Communion in the Antill Vestry.
