THE Mayor of Charnwood, Coun Pauline Ranson, opened the newly-devel- oped garden area at Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland’s Men in Sheds base last week.

The ‘garden party’ event was attended by around 50 members of the community, including businesses, local authorities, tourism partners, healthcare officials and Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan.

It consisted of a tour of the shed, at Unit 9 Oaks Industrial Estate, Festival Drive, and gave the members a chance to showcase items they have made.

This was followed by the official opening of the new garden which was funded by Tesco Loughborough.

The men have already made the garden into a ‘home-grown’ haven nurtured lots of plants and vegetables within their plastic recycled bottle greenhouse.

Tony Donovan, executive director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, said: “This was a marvellous event attended by many representatives and we were really pleased with the response from visitors.”

The Echo recently reported that the project, which gives older men a chance to make friends while building household items, has welcomed its 100th member.

The shed has many health and wellbeing benefits and very soon women will also be joining the group.
