We live in an open and democratic society, so we need to know....

-

WHO exactly has objected to mugs depicting images of the Knights Templar being sold from a stall in Loughborough’s Friday bric-a-brac market?

Charnwood Borough Council cannot “comment as to why the mugs were offensive” - why? Come off it; we live in an open democratic society.

Having only a vague knowledge of who or what the Knights Templar are, what might exactly be considered offensive in relation to their activities? The two nuggets of information relating to the Knights Templar is that they establish a hospital in Malta. They also espouse Christianity, and fought in raging battles. Sounds a bit to me, much like current events.

Mention of war battles leads on to the proposition of David Walker (Echo October 11) that the EU through its bureaucrats has kept the peace in western Europe, neat way of sidelining NATO?

If only that were true; many dreams would be fulfilled, many nations who signed up to the European Union are still and committed to war. Two of these countries signed the Versailles Agreement which, consequently, led to Hitler and the Second World War.

Such an idea is not disputed. However, what is conten- tious is the drawing of lines in the sand to create countries in the Middle East. This settlement produced a sequence of armed conflicts culminating in the pickle we have today.

Powerful bureaucrats may create benefits; but too often they create unforseen consequences. Why should the EU be any different?

David Girdler, Loughborough.
