Honesty which had the room in hysterics

- Megan Cox

HONEST, witty and plenty of MDMA references... Simon Amstell took to the stage at Loughborough Town Hall on Wednesday (October 18) with his new stand-up show, What is This?

And though the evening may have focused on questioning everything and anything, one thing is certain, and that is that this reviewer had a ruddy good time.

Comedian Mawaan Rizwan warmed up the audience for the former Never Mind the Buzzcocks host and he had the room in hysterics.

His material was quirky, unbelievably creative and sidesplittingly funny. The comedic dance routines were genius - and who knew someone could be so sassy with a babywipe?!

At one point this reviewer was laughing so hard it was difficult to write notes as the combination of Missy Elliott references and a bit about pranking people by boiling their eggs while they sleep, genu- inely made me cry with laughter.

I fully recommend going to see Mawaan if you have the chance, and fingers-crossed he will return to Loughborough in the future as a headlining comedian.

After a short break, it was time for Mr Amstell to take to the stage.

Simon’s material was honest - very honest - and looked at the difficulties he faced while figuring out his sexuality and the issues he had connecting with those close to him.

It was cleverly done and Simon was able to talk about deeply personal issues in a comical, interesting way, which is no easy feat.

A highlight was definitely hearing how Simon was temporarily reborn as a Jesus-type figure at a slightly sexist sweat lodge.

A different kind of humour to the opening act, but entertaining nonetheless.
