Loughborou­gh RFC get first league win of season

MIDLANDS 2 EAST NORTH LOUGHBOROU­GH 38 NOTTINGHAM CASUALS 12 LOUGHBOROU­GH recorded the first league win and bonus point win of the season, with a 38 -12 point victory over Nottingham Casuals at Derby Road Playing Fields.

Loughborou­gh started strongly with the wind in their favour, the pack again dominating in the tight and the first points came from a converted push over try by Jack Percival giving Loughborou­gh at 7-0 lead.

The next play saw tight work by the forwards which allowed Thomas Kirkby to pick and go from a bottom of the ruck, spinning round Casuals number 3, darting past the full back to go under the posts and score to make it 14-0.

Loughborou­gh kept up the dominance in the forwards and great play by Greg Biddle Loughborou­gh’s inform number 10, released the backs allowing David Appleby to score in the corner to give the home side a 19-0 lead at the break.

The second half saw the tides change as a lapse in concentrat­ion saw Casuals take advantage, scoring two tries (one converted) to reduce the arrears to 19-12.

It took a talking to by skipper Jamie Grice to get the team to calm down and go back to the game plan. The last 15 minutes saw the forwards again dominant in the scrum and Jamie Grice scored to make it 24-12 and then David Appleby scored under the posts as the score increaed to 31 – 12.

The next try to finish the game started with a dazzling run from Steve Sands sideways across the Loughborou­gh 22, darting into the Casuals half, supported by Thomas Kirby a great scissors move and Kirby scored and converted the try as Loughborou­gh won 38-12.

Captain James Busby said: “Loughborou­gh have been on a solid run for weeks and not been able to convert possession and dominance into a win, but we fixed it today.”
