KEGWORTH PLAYERS GALA EVENING. Kegworth Players are celebrating its 70th year of productions with a Gala Evening showcasing the talent within the Society.

This will be taking place on three nights later this month, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 9, 10 and 11.

There will be performances from both new members and longer standing members who don’t normally tread the boards any more. The evening will be filled with sketches, songs, monologues and even some dance.

There will be a display of some of the group’s archive materials including the programme from the first ever production! We will also be showcasing some of our more unique and fantastic costumes each evening in the hall.

Say the Players: “We would love everyone to come and help us celebrate this marvelous occasion.”

There has been an active Dramatic Society in Kegworth from the early part of the 20th Century.

After the second World War, they were , in 1947, lucky enough to have a group of very talented and enthusiastic villagers ready and willing to launch themselves on the public as a drama society - a group made up from people with an interest in the stage.

Founded by Margaret Wood a new society with a wealth of talent and an enthusiasm was launched which has continued to this day.

The list of plays performed by Kegworth Players brings home the scope and abilities of the society, ranging from comedy to tragedy, from the classics to costume dramas, through every conceivable type of theatrical style in the book.

The group say it takes courage from the producers to decide on a play - particularly if that play happens to be innovative, or quirky, or just downright challenging - because they can come to grief very publicly if things go wrong!

Kegworth Players are renowned for their willingness to try anything ( even if it is only once!).

They are constantly seeking new members to inject new blood and ideas into their activities. “Join us if you dare make the commitment to a society whose ethos is one of enjoyment and lasting friendship, as well as the opportunity to display and indulge your talents along the way” they say.

The Players mount two productions each year in May and November.

They meet socially on the first Tuesday each month at 8.00pm at The Red Lion on High Street, and prospective new members are always made very welcome at those meetings.

There is much more than acting to the Players, and there are lots of non-acting jobs to be filled, such as costumes, wardrobe and properties; Technology (e.g. Light and Sound); Front of House; Prompting; Set design and building; Producing/ Directing; Stage Managing; Caterers, tea makers and bar staff; Special efffects; publicity, and others.

KEGWORTH RAINBOWS. Kegworth Rainbows have been operating for 29 years and are one of the longest running in the area and currently have 14 members -- meet every Wednesday during term time in the Main Hall of Kegworth Primary School from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.

At the moment they are looking to raise funds to help buy books and badges to support and recognise the activities they undertake to fulfil their Rainbow Promise - and that has the 4 elements - Look, Learn, Laugh and Love.

The subscriptions the girls pay to attend cover only the costs of the Hall Hire and Central Girl Guiding overheads/insurance, hence the need for fund raising.

Rainbows are aged from five to seven. When they are seven, the girls graduate to Brownies who have been meeting in Kegworth for well over 40 years. Brownies meet immediately after Rainbows at the same venue and continue the guiding programme.

Recent some of the Rainbows made a trip to the Yew Lodge Hotel in the village and where their visited Marco Pierre White restaurant. They decorated pizza’s, laid the table and then ate in the freshly cooked pizza in the restaurant, where there were served by the Head Chef himself and many of the restaurant staff.

Other trips have been visits to Arthur Marshall’s farm to learn about the tractors and other old agricultural equipment and then collect the eggs!

The group are applying to the Aviva Community Lottery Fund – it makes funding available to local projects that are making a positive change in their community - to help continue their development and the plea they are making is to help get the girls get ‘recognition’ for the projects they do with Look, Learn, Laugh and Love and ask those willing to support them to vote at aviva.co.uk/ community-fund.

Voting closes at mid-day on November 21.

COMMUNITY LIBRARY. Saturday, October 7, saw our sponsored Pedal for Pads cycling tour of all the Community Managed Libraries in Leicestershire – 208.3miles – taking part in both the library and the Coop store!

We were hoping to raise enough money to buy ipads for the community to use in the library.

The extremely good news is that we have exceeded our initial target and now have a final total of £1,671.87p with which to purchase the ipads and their associated security measures.

So, a very big “Thank you” indeed to all of the riders, the sponsors and, of course, the people who made the event happen!

The current Exhibition by Sutton Bonington Artists is to run for another three weeks and will finish on November 20. Do take a look at their varied range of subjects, which, incidentally, are all for sale!

The Jig-saw Jamboree takes place every Friday afternoon between 2pm. and 6pm, and has a varied selection of jig-saws to borrow for the price of £1 each. Come and see for yourselves!
