Community group’s potato plea
AN A-PEEL-ING idea! A community group is once again encouraging people living in Loughborough to grow their own potatoes.
Loughborough’s well-loved annual Potato Day will be back in 2018 and now is the time to grab a bargain by placing your pre-orders before December 6.
Pre-ordering allows people to purchase their seed potato at fantastic prices whilst helping to raise funds for community group Transition Loughborough.
Following the success of its first three events, Transition Loughborough is now taking pre-orders for 40 varieties of seed potato which will be available to pick up at Loughborough Market on Saturday, January 27.
Orders can be placed online or through a paper form available at: transitionloughborough.wordpress.com/potatoday-2018
Jon Knight, of Transition Loughborough, said: “Potato Day is a fun and practical way of helping people to ‘grow their own’.
“You can order any quantity of seed potato you like - from one seed potato if you just want to have a go at growing a few potatoes in a pot, up to a sacks worth for an allotment site.
“Because it’s much cheaper than buying seed potato in the shops, it’s perfect for both complete beginners as well as those who’ve been growing their own for years.”
It’s also possible to preorder: garlics, onions, shallots, beans, peas, green manure and bags to grow potatoes through the website. These pre-orders also close on December 6.
A limited amount of seed potatoes will be available for sale on the day on the market stall, at higher prices than preorder prices. However the group often sell out of stock before the day is over!
