Community bonfire and firework display is big hit

THE skies of Shepshed lit up at the weekend as the annual Shepshed Cricket Club’s Community Bonfire and Firework Display returned.

The popular event again took place at the Morley Lane Cricket Ground off Iveshead Road, Shepshed, on Saturday (November 4).

This year approximately 1,500 residents wrapped up warm and came out to enjoy the evening and a sparkler or two.

A spokesperson from the cricket club told the Echo: “It went really well and everyone seemed to enjoy the entertainment we had and the fireworks.

“We had a lady called Cara Dudgeon, of Deejayz Parties, two 16-year-olds girls called Lightbulb Parade and we also had entertainment from BrightLights Theatre School.

“We had a shuttle bus doing the loop of Shepshed, picking people up and bringing them to the event.

“A few stallholders said it didn’t feel as busy and that there may have not been as many people as in previous years, but it was the smoothest running one.”

When asked why they continue to host the event, the spokesperson said: “It’s the feedback we get. No one puts anything on like it in Shepshed.

“We have very few community events, we have the Lion’s carnival in summer but for things like this people would have to travel out of town to Hathern or the university.

“Because we have the shuttle bus, people can get there and back safely and enjoy an organised event.

“This is all ran by volunteers, mainly from the cricket club. They give up their time to organise this, as we do have very little in Shepshed.”

A number of positive comments were left online following the event, including one from Shepshed Town Councillor Coun Diane Horn.

Coun Horn wrote: “Great community event, organising, setting up, clearing up. Lovely to see friends, neighbours and families having a lovely time, keep up the good work.”
