QUORN in Bloom held an award ceremony for the voluntary groups and individuals recognised in this year’s East Midlands in Bloom competition.

The event, hosted at Quorn Grange Hotel, was attended by: Jeff Bates, chairman of East Midlands in Bloom, his wife Irene, who was the secretary of the East Midlands in Bloom for many years, Coun Hilary Fryer, lead member for open spaces at Charnwood Borough Council, and Gary Hughes, Quorn Parish Council chairman.

In celebration of Quorn’s success, attendees watched a short series of photos of the village through the seasons then awards were given out.

The Grange got a Gold Award again this year in the Best Hotel/Pub category and the award was received by grounds contractor Michael Liggins, of Firetree, and his assistant Luke Pollar.

They are said to be keeping the garden to the same high standard as their predecessor Alison Saxby.

Awards were also given to Joan and Roger Walton, who were awarded Silver in the Best Front Garden category, and the Quorn and Woodhouse Station which got Silver in the Best Retail/Commercial category.

While speaking about the Neighbourhood Awards, Mr Bates said Abbeyfield Holloway House, which received a level 5 Outstanding, “could open for the yellow book” it was that good. Springfield Lake and the Mills got a level 4 Thriving.

Mr Bates then went on to say the Memorial Garden was the smallest park ever to be given the Best Park award and said it was like a “small botanic garden”.

This award was given out prior to the event at the area awards by president of East Midlands in Bloom, Doug Stacey.

All the groups involved including: Quorn Baptist Church, St Bartholomew’s Church, St Bart’s School, Highthorne Lane Allotments and the Quorn in Bloom group for Church View Garden received a copy of the village’s Gold Award certificate.

The awards ceremony was finished with tea and scones with thanks to Quorn Grange Hotel.

Photos from the event and sponsors can be found on the Quorn in Bloom website.
