Buildings turn red for Poppy Appeal

-

AS PART of Leicestershire’s continuing commemoration of the centenary of the First World War, a number of iconic buildings are again lighting up in red for the duration of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

This is an initiative of Leicestershire’s WW1 Centenary Reference Group with the support of the Leicestershire and Rutland Royal British Legion.

Those taking part include All Saint’s Church, Newtown Linford; County Hall; St James Church, Birstall; St Mary’s Church, Wymeswold; St Edward’s Church, Castle Donington; Carillon, Loughborough; Birstall Parish Council offices; and War Memorial Castle Donington.

The initiative is being led by the Lord-Lieutenant, Lady Gretton, and the County President of the Royal British Legion, Colonel Robert Martin.

Lady Gretton said: “I hope that by illuminating some of our buildings in the city and county during the Poppy Appeal will provide a simple but powerful expression of our community’s support for the Poppy Appeal.”

Colonel Robert Martin added: “As the custodians of Remembrance the Royal British Legion is delighted to be supporting this initiative which will show our collective appreciation and support for the men and women of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces who have selflessly and courageously served our country and continue to do so.”
