COMMUNITY GROUPS GETS AWARD. Kegworth’s community group ONEKegworth has received an accolade in the Leicestershire and Rutland Achievement Awards for 2017.

The winners of Leicestershire and Rutland Rural Community Council’s annual Rural Achievement Awards were approved as circulated and signed by the chairman revealed at an impressive ceremony at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium when the RCC’s awards celebrated the contributions of people, community groups, businesses and local facilities to rural life in Leicestershire and Rutland.

There were six award categories and the ONEKegworth award was for the Best Community Engagement class, sponsored by Smallman & Son:

Those at the ceremony were told that ONEKegworth, the group of volunteers behind the village’s ONE Weekend, is taking on organising more events to bring the community together after the success of the first two weekends.

From the inaugural ONE Weekend in 2016, the event grew to welcome more than 5,000 visitors last July. ONE Kegworth is now organising Christmas in the Marketplace and the Easter Charter Market with more and more volunteers.

Julie Cooke of ONEKegworth was runner up in the Unsung Heroes Award, sponsored by Taste Harborough and she said she was delighted to be able to say that ONEKegworth were winners of the Achievement Award which had been presented to them in the form of a trophy and a framed certificate.

Julie said they had strong competition from The Hero Project in Coalville and Sustainable Harborough Partnership. Looking round the room it was clear that our ONEKegworth team make up of young students thru to those of us a little more ‘silver’ were a unique mix. Something we should celebrate and encourage more of.

The group’s Impact report will be out shortly giving an update on their work in 2016/17.

SIDELEY PARK REGENERATION. Friends of Kegworth’s Sideley Park joined forces again to finish off phase 1 of the regeneration of the Park with the planting of the Copse area’s and bulb planting.

This project started back in Autumn 2016 where volunteers from ONEKegworth, village residents of members of Kegworth Parish Council joined forces to regenerate the old Sideley recreation area.

A village wide consultation ensued and the plan was built. Multi use leisure paths, teenage climbing equipment , new circular picnic benches and celebration seats were installed.

A new, and unique to North West Leicestershire saw a dog agility area being installed to allow dogs and owners to ‘play’ without the distraction of others, and allowed the Park to become free of running dogs - allowing space and security for those wanting a more tranquil area- and even learn to rise a bike! The design was done by a local village resident. This summer saw many groups and families enjoy the space and making use of the picnic area’s

The planting scheme was designed again by another village resident Jan Barrowcliff, and thanks to grants from East Midlands Airport, NWLDC and a couple of local businesses/residents, much of the plants were able to be bought this year and Friends of the Park have worked tiredly to get the ground ready for the generous donation of manure from local famers.

The icing on the cake will surely be next Spring when the bulbs show their colours, the welcome area turns on its charm, the sensory area is the therapeutic space for many and the copse provides a calendar of colour!

If you are interested in joining the team please contact Vicky Roe, Clerk to the Parish Council
