Town hair salon celebrating 40th anniversary

-

A LOUGHBOROUGH hair salon is celebrating its 40th anniversary this November.

Smith and Smith Hair, in Warners Lane, started out as Mister Smiths on November 21, 1977, and is still owned by husband and wife team Andrew and Jo Smith.

The hairdressers originally started out with three stylists and one assistant.

Over the years the salon has gained a good reputation within Loughborough and attracted lots of clients who were ‘looking for somewhere different’ to get their hair done.

As the client base grew, so did the staff and for the past 30 years there has been about 20 people working there.

The salon underwent a refurbishment in 1990 when the salon name changed to Smith and Smith.

Salon manager Kelly and staff member Jane have been with the salon a number of years - Jane 37 years, and Kelly 25.

Andrew and Jo’s daughter Sophie also joined the team in the 1990s and is still working there today.

Kelly told the Echo: “As bosses they are incredibly well thought of by staff old and new and, even though people have moved on over the years, they still keep in touch.

“As staff we do get treated to holidays and short breaks on special occasions. Previously we have been to Lanzarote and Center Parcs on a number of occasions.”

She continued: “To celebrate the 40th anniversary we are holding a drinks reception for clients, staff and guests at the salon in November and we are also heading off to Center Parcs again in January.

“Many of our clients have been coming to Smith and Smith for the 40 years we’ve been open and are looking forward to celebrating with us all.”
