‘I have asked our enforcement team to look at this issue’

- Coun Jenny Bokor Lead Member for Loughborough

WITH regards to your letter “when will the authorities address these problems” I would like to reassure your reader that there is every need to contact the council.

We work hard to keep the streets of our towns and villages clean – as do many residents – and it is extremely disappointing to see the picture in last week’s newspaper. I have asked our enforcement team to investigate this incident.

With the university, we regularly remind students of their responsibilities to their community including when it comes to making sure their bins are out on time and then put away as well.

At the start of the term, with the university and police, we ran a campaign called #Think #Think #Think to encourage the students to think about their impact on the community. It involved knocking on doors and talking to students and we also delivered 6,000 information leaflets.

We will continue to work with the university to drive the message home.

If a complaint is made we will investigate. Since October 2015, in the Storer Road area of town our enforcement team has issued warnings to 33 properties for having rubbish on the prop- erty, 29 for leaving bins on streets and 19 for having side waste

The warnings usually work but ultimately we can issue fines as well.

I have to say while some bins may be left out, it does not mean students are the ones tipping them over or daubing graffiti on the walls.

We have a diverse community in Loughborough and while we may not always get on, we should talk to each other to help minimise problems.

So if readers have any issues related to wheelie bins in student areas of the town please contact the council on 01509 634563 or email cleaner.greener@charnwood.gov.uk.

You can also call the university on 01509 222141 to report issues.
